Adrian's Car Dilema, the consolidated story!

Postby adrian » Mon Mar 12, 2007 12:33 pm

Alright friends. As you've guessed I am selling my darling S2000 as I am not using it enough since my little girl arrived. I am not even taking it to work these days! Advert at
http://www.PWCIreland.com/s2000 for those interested.

Anyway, I have 2 basic options:

1) With the money I get buy another motor or put some cash to it to have about ~27k to spend on a motor. The petrol head in me is saying to do this
2) Spend around ~13k on a motor freeing up some money but having a lesser car and a lesser choice too.

What I have noticed is that there is very little choice in the ~13k options and even with the ~27k option too for what I want. My requirements are simple, I want a car that has some power, looks and rarity...I love my motors having a unique factor. I do not mind a motor with bigger servicing costs as I will only be doing about 6k miles a year and it will not be my main car, However, I do want back seats. So my motors of choice so far are as follows (in no particular order):

Mitsi FTO GPX Manual - I know you all will favor thisas it's an FTO forum but my drawback is that I have already had an FTO and I don't like repeating cars... we all have a list to get through!

Mazda RX 7 - I am told a baby seat is next to impossible in one of these and I am scared of buying a lemon or something that will give me trouble. Cool car though, and on my list

EVO 8 - super machine but a bit overpriced and normal looking...

A 1990 Porsche 911 (964) Carrera 2 Coupe. 17 years old but still reaks of class. 3.6 litre and there are a few about the UK that have had all the known problems sorted. Bit afraid of the age and servicing, but I do so few miles I might get away with it! This one is one I am looking at:
http://www.pistonheads.co.uk/sales/137177.htm

A 1999 TVR Cerbera 4.5 - Class class motor, but very very expensive to run from what I am reading. Some owners are lucky, some VERY unlucky

Toyota Supra - on the list but do not really flot my boat...

Toyota Celica GT (1997 type) - Nice, reliable but a bit of a step down from the S2000 though. Good value all the same.

2002 Audi A4 Cabriolet 1.8 T - Nice, and a good saving to be had by importing from the UK. Would still love a cabrio after the S2000 but is this really an exciting car? Alot around Ireland at the moment too.

2001 Mercedes CLK 230 Kompressor Coupe - Nice, but have I plenty of time to buy one in my mid life era?!

2001 Mercedes CLK 230 Kompressor Cabriolet - See exact comment from the 2002 Audi A4 Cabrio

Older type Honda Prelude - Very nice, but I am just a bit, eh, not bothered

2002 Honda Integra DC5 - Overpriced... I mean, sometimes more expensice then an S2000!

Anyone else got any bright ideas or comments on the above?

A4 cab is a great car for what it is but I'd say you won't really enjoy it -

I know someone who had one and sold it within 4 months - they're slow and they don't handle particularly well although as a cuiser I believe they are great.

Like I said in one of the other posts - a B5 RS4 Avant would be my choice (well actually, a TT would be mine ;)).

Bundles of power, great handling, great cuising ability, loads of space, lots of class as well as petrolhead kudos and definitely rare :)

Thanks Shane. A TT is on my list as well actually....

As for the others, I am looking for something with looks... those saloons with power that look the same as the 1.6's just don't do it for me...

Another option..

Get an FTO for say 6k.. then spend as much making it into a MENTAL yoke..

Look into 4wd drivetrains - TT conversions - Nitros - Wide body work - Wider Rear Axel..
Custom Paint

Maybe Tbar roof top?

Wouldn't really be repitition - would be revisiting ;-)

Of the above list the celica is the least ambitious and not exactly rare. But if you're interested in that sort of thing and for that sort of money ~13k I'd go for the newer shape 7th gen celica with the 1.8 190bhp engine. -not a big fan of the 6th gen car with the twin round lights -cheap though.
If you can live with the motor tax, I'd suggest a GTV 3l V6. Nice looks, style, not expensive and one of the sweetest engines in the business. You can always drive the hilux when it's in for repair :P

Give it a rest, already!

Adrian, get that list down to 4 cars - it will make for easier deliberation. Bear in mind that you're looking for the complete package - looks, performance and practicality - very few cars can fit the bill. On that basis, you're going to have to let something slide, decide which area you're going to take the hit on and whittle the list down further.

You also need to decide on yourbudget - you're not making it easy for yourself when you talk about figures of between 13 and 27k!

Really nice looking car - but now you are onto a 30K budget and bringing some serious much newer machinery into consideration including a Lotus Exige / 350Z / EVO 8 FQ320 / BMW M3 etc

Lotus Exige 2 seater, so no can do!
350Z 2 seater, so no can do!
EVO 8 FQ320 - em perhaps, but I hear servicing is nuts....
BMW M3, very very nice but a bit "saloon with power" as discussed! Still, M3 has always been a favorite of mine

Cheers though, keep em comin!

Excellent MyfeckinFTO :smt023
The Masser or the Jag would be my personal favourates.
Even if you got a regular XK8, Irish prices start in the low to mid twenties, I'm sure you could get a much nicer/newer UK car for similar money.
For exclusivity the Masser is the way to go.
(quite a broad spectrum now, toyota celica to jag XKR :smt102 )
