That time of year

Postby Bernard » Fri Jan 23, 2009 6:50 pm

As above, It's that time of year again.
I got my renewal from Britton (Zurich) the other day... €710, that's about €100 more than last year.

I sat down with the phone book and rang around, as it turns out the first call I made gave the best premium.

Now bear in mind I'm 30 with 7 years NCB and a full licence since 2001.

All the below are for fully comp. with the NCB protected.
The info might help someone out a bit.

I had fun with Quinn who told me (again) that they don't cover FTOs, even whenI told them I know people that have FTOs insured with them it didn't make a difference.
I tried their online quote and couldn't get one on a '00 but could on a '99, so I phoned them back, we had a nice long conversation about how they were wrong and how a GPX is the same as a "24 valve V6 MI-Vec", also that No, FTOs aren't 224BHP

Anyway, to cut a long story short, I phoned Britton back and told them I got a quote of €650 (oops) and they matched it :D

Nice! Interesting the variance between all the AXA quotes! I'm actually with them myself at the moment.

Thanks for this Bernard... I was about to post a question relevant to this. Mine is up in March. currently paying 860 fully comp protected with quinn.

guys, if I am ringing for quotes and they ask if I have any claims in the past 5 years do I say yes? I had a minor bumper tap with quinn. It didn't affect my premium, stayed at 860, plus my No claims was protected so stayed at 6 years.

I would, just to be on the safe side if nothing else.

It looks like they quoted from excess direct, they're the only ones I can think of that have a €4,000 excess.

Technically it's insurance

Mine is up at the end of february.
I might try Glennons. FBD has gone up considerably each year for two years.

I got a letter from AA insurance (the only one I didn't ring ) they have an offer at the moment guaranteeing to beat your renewal.

There's the usual spiel about T&C so they might not cover FTOs but it's worth a call.

I've been told by someone in the industry that there's usually a 10% leeway on premiums.
I'm not suggesting that you tell porkies, just if you happen to find a quote, say around €46 cheaper...they'll probably match it.

rang glennons.... No go..

Only place that would quote was XS direct. 900 per year plus 4k excess.

29 full license 6 years, 6 years NCB.

I asked was it the minor bumper tap claim I had in 2007 (less than 4k cost) and she said no. It's the car itself. Probably because its an import. but nobody is quoting except XS direct.

Might need to consider selling it (offloading given the current market). not gonna drop more than 1k on insurance. anyone any wild tips? :)

might try AA now, but to be honest, I won't be expecting a cheap quote off anyone. They all treat the FTO like its a lambo...

Try insuring a different car with Quinn and then transfer the insurance to the FTO???
I'm with them (not a fact I'm proud of),but 26 years old, 6 NCB, and under €700.
But, like others, they won't quote on new policies AFAIK.

Thanks for that tip! I'm with Quinn currently 6years NCB. last year was 860per year. it's up in 3 weeks so shopping around to see can I save 100 or so. No go. Rang AA. same thing. won't insure an FTO. didn't even hear my details. no wonder its a rare car on the roads. I guess I can just hope maybe my quinn quote will come down this year. although with the Quinn situation (600m lost in anglo) Im not sure that will happen.

It always amazes me the way the insurance industry regards the FTO.
My insurance fell considerably when I went from an (value 8K) FTO to a much more powerfull (value 35K) 350Z.

And my (40K +) 2.6 tonne Range Rover Sport is now costing me 440Euros a year fully comp. Makes no sense to me.

thats encouraging. I have had no reason for mine to increase over last years 860, plus I now have an extra years No Claims, so hopefully it will come down. lokos like changing insurer is not really a viable option.

Its alright, 23, 2 years no claims etc. As for wild tips, i JUST posted this in another insurance topic but incase you wont see it,,, A buddy of mine went about insuring a corolla van recently and his quoted premium dropped when he added his girlfriend onto the policy. Makes zero sense I know but its interesting none the less.

yeah, they figure that if there is a girl on the policy she will be driving the car at least some of the time, and during that time its less likley to be in an accident.

At first Eaglestar (now Zurich) wouldn't quote me at all..

then I rang the Galway office instead of their Dublin number...that helped alot.

Also if you happen to know anybody whos business they'd be keen to keep, name dropping like a loon helps too..

Worked for me..

LOL classic... "eh, eh, do you know, peter murphy? yeah, well, he told me to come here, so don't let me down.. come on now... you know Sean O'Shea? he sent me too"....

might have to resort to some good old name dropping. I love Ireland.

you guys are seriously lucky.... I have 7 years no claims bonus (it was protected) and am 30 in a couple of weeks, but thanks to some ignorant cow who pulled into my lane n a wet morning in 2007 and hit the brakes immediately my life is over for insuring an FTO. Quinn is the only one who will touch me at 1300euro. screw that. what a rip.
bitter...
