Anyone been to China?

Postby CJ » Thu Jul 21, 2005 4:49 pm

I'm off to China for 2 weeks in September, Beijing and then Dalian down south for the second week. I've been in Asia before but not China specifically, has anyone visited, if so, any advice? A mate is marrying a Chinese girl and they're having the wedding in her home town, should be a serious eye opener (both for ourselves and the Chinese - theres about 30 of us lot travelling over for the craic!)

Yes I've been several times CJ, but on business so I always had a guide with me. I'd recommend having someone with you that can translate and look out for you as no one outside the cities speaks English. We went to some well out of the way places well down in the South near Shenzhen. However never felt threatened or concerned in any way - much the same in Hong Kong.

And if we can't be good?

Have a good time - no doubt you'll be dropping in on us from China in any case. Don't worry about the shop - we won't hold any parties while you're away - you may have a few split topics to deal with when you get back though. :smt077

Bring back some photos of some choice motors from China.

Came back last night after 2 days of travelling including a 14 hour stopover in Budapest to relax for a while, I'm still knackered mind you! China is a great country and I had a great time, we did all the tourist bits and pieces in Bejing in the first week, the Great Wall is indeed a great sight! The second week was more relaxed in the east of China (Dalian) and we took some time out to enjoy the beachs and bars in the area. The food was great and before anyone asks, yes I ate dog! (not too sure if it was a jack russel or a german shepard but it wasn't all that bad :)) I'm not sure I could live there though, the idea of communism and a dictatorship doesn't really sit well with my own beleifs.

MfFTO asked about cars, surprisingly enough, the motor trade is dominated by euro makes such as VW and Audi, while there were a few Jap cars on the road, they only make up about 20% of the total (possibly due to the fact that the Chinese don't get on too well with the Japanese).
In terms of exotica, there wasn't a whole lot to choose from, a Carrera 4, an STI, a GTO and a Hummer where the only cars that stick out in my mind. Chinese drivers are absolute lunatics, they have great roads but drive like maniacs most of the time, theres very little adherence to regulation but theres does appear to be some sort of method to the madness e.g if you pull out onto a road in front of oncoming traffic it appears that you have the right of way and traffic just slows down to let you out :?

Anyway, back in the scene now, looks like you guys have been busy on the boards, I'll make an attempt today to get thru most of the threads :)
