The Chrysler Chery Amulet - I hope they don't sell it here

Postby pergau » Wed Aug 15, 2007 1:57 pm

Take a look at the Crash Test video for this http://www.autoblog.com/2007/08/12/video-chrysler-might-want-to-reconsider-that-chery-deal/
It's one of the cars that is made in China for Chrysler.

That's a SEAT Toledo MK1, which itself is based on the MK2 Golf. NCAP any 90's car (including the FTO) and that's generally what you get.
Other cars sold in China include the Citroen ZX, (Shenglong Fukang) which has sprouted a rather fetching (?) boot

The Audi 100 is huge over there (literally)
Image
As far as I know, they still make the MK2 Jetta over there, only with a 90's Passat front end: Nice!

These are all built under license and are above board. What I find more interesting are the blatant copies that Chinese companies build without license. Copyright laws in China are virtually non existant so you get the likes of:

The UFO, a Rav4 with no connection to Toyota.
Image
A car made by Geely called the Merine, which shares only shoddy build quality with the real C Class.

It's a subject I find fascinating. The funny thing is that all the major players want to get into China for manufacturing so haven't really got their claws out to challenge these cars. There are many more cars out there that are a lot funnier.

If they were to copy the FTO, I'd probably buy one!

Check out http://www.autosoviet.altervista.org/index3.htm for a great site about Russian, Chinese and Eastern European cars

99.9% of the Taxi's in china are Jetta's. All of which have a nice clear PVC overed interior. :smt078
Lots to think about, nothing to worry about!

If I had the space I'd totally get a wartburg..Crazy little thing.. 2stroke engine.. oil is mixed with the petrol.. Bio-degradalbe body-shell..Nosiy as hull and generally regarded as one of the most polluting cars about.. still - for some reason I love em..
Had the pleasure of visiting east berlin while the wall was still there, so I've been a passenger in one (wasn't old enough to even think about getting to drive it..)we fitted 6 people in it..

little things we're every where there - Wartburgs, Trabants and Ladas..all over the gaf.

Yeah, for some reason I love eastern european cars too. Can't understand why. They just have this crappyness that's so charming.
