ebay/paypal computer refund issue

Postby colm_mcm » Wed Aug 19, 2009 9:49 am

Seems there are a few people round here who know the score with ebay and paypal. #
A friend bought a refurbished laptop on ebay, as soon as he got it he realised the battery wasn't holding a charge, so sent it back straight away. they then sent it back to him saying it had been thoroughily examined. once he had it running for a few minutes he noticed it was seriously overheating.
He's lost confidence in the laptop, and the company. they've offered him another repair. Can he push for a refund through paypal?

very doubtful... Paypal protect the purchase. The actual transaction itself, but I don't think they guarantee the quality of the goods. . If there is an issue with the goods themselves thats between him and the seller. Paypal simply facilitated the transaction. I suppose he should open a ticket with paypal and ask them. but I wouldn't say the would cover it.

eBay provide buyer protection. See http://pages.ebay.ie/help/buy/protection-programs.html This should be your first port of call. Open an issue in their 'Resolution Center' http://pages.ebay.ie/help/buy/disputes.html If you receive approval from this approach, PayPal will follow suit... eBay now own PayPal.

I've gone down this path before regarding a laptop (new) and was successful.

Best of luck with it.

Oh, by the way, most sellers, in their 'confirmation of sale' e-mail ask you to contact them if any problems at a yahoo or gmail address or some such. Don't do this. Always use the messaging service that eBay provide to contact the seller. This will greatly speed up the 'resolution' process.

Apologies if I'm stating the bleedin' obvious!

Keep all communications within eBay paypal..

Here's a snippet of text from my current claim, due to close today.

Resolution Center - Claim Details
A claim has been filed against this transaction. The seller's deadline for responding to this claim is Sep. 4, 2009. The seller has the option to provide a full refund for the amount of the transaction, offer a full refund if the item is returned in its original condition, offer a partial refund in an amount you agree to, provide proof that a refund was already issued to you, or disagree with your claim. If the seller does not respond by the deadline, the claim will be decided in your favor. You may cancel this case at any time by clicking "Cancel" below.

Process is fairly straightforward once you get it started.
