With the amount of time the batteries last you wouldn't even get to see the ad breaks!
Thats the one drawback with the smart phones, amazing machines, and so much you can do with them, but you would really need to carry around a couple of spare batteries to last you through the day without charging!

I'd assume it varies, android is only an operating system covering everything from smart phones to tablets

Re-reading your post I see you were on about smart phones. My htc battery doesn't last pi55ing time if I do video or surfing on it.

Turning down the brightness makes a huge difference to battery life

I find the advanced task killer app spanktastic on my samsung -insert stupid name here- android.
I used to get about 10hours if i used it and maybe 15ish hours if i left it on standby, installed an ATK and now i find myself watching the most random videos on youtube just to try drain the battery for a full charge every second night.

With lithium ion batteries, do you actually need to fully discharge them? I thought it didn't matter?

No idea, i was told that years ago when battery life was something you put at the top of your list when buying a phone and its just stuck with me. Cant imagine regular practice doing the battery any harm so iv stuck with it.

Have task killer, and have the brightness turned down, but I still get no time off it, if I was doing something like reading a book on it, (with the kindle app), then I get about an hour off it, possibly an hour and a half if very lucky. Running on standby it has to be charged every night no matter what.

Thats just plain nasty, it really is shocking how fast androids drain their battery.
When i first got my phone i brought it back to vodafone and demanded a new battery after a week saying i had been given a dud battery when i bought the phone. I was only getting 4 or 5 hours use but then again the phone was never in stand by, was constantly running apps or surfing online.

What hardware do you have?
What OS/Kernel are you running on it?

I have two Androids and both give me plenty of life...

Samsung tab 2days+ running APPLICATIONS left right and center...but no bluetooth, or gps..those are the devil.
HTC Desire OLD 2/3days without major action... 24hours w. plenty of action...

Also I dont use "Application Killer" anymore - it buggers up things...

Gonna disagree with you here. The samsung tab 10.1 has great battery life, very comparable to the iPad. I don't think there is significant difference between the iphone and similar spec android phones either, in that they both tend to be pi$$ poor, and generally need charging every night.

Right, I'm going to clarify here, I'm on about smartphones, not Ipads or Samsung tabs or any other tabs. Because as far as I know they have good battery life, its the phones that have the poor life.

I have the iphone 4s and I use battery doctor for charging half the time (sometimes i forget). It somehow optimises charging and extends battery life. I get a day out of the phone with use, 2 days without much use. My nokia N8 was similar life and my N95 previous to that. I had a Nokia Express music phone 2 years ago and the battery on that smart phone was great. 5 days on standby. It actually did what it said on the tin. Lithium ion batteries are not as badly hit by battery memory syndrome as their older cousins, but they will lose capacity over time unless maintained as per the recommendations in your operating manual (ie...fully charge and fully discharge).

I'm surprised they haven't released a battery charger that discharges a battery fully (or to 1%) before charging to 100% and turning itself off. For higher spec items, this would be great, if only the discharged energy were not to be wasted. Laptops and Tablets are the perfect example where this technology would be greatly utilised, saving energy and prolonging the life of otherwise toxic materials.
