Replace or Recondition Gearbox

Postby adrian » Wed Jun 04, 2003 2:05 pm

Well,

It's happened. My FTO box is starting to give up. I'll keep this short. What would you do at these prices?

OPTION 1) Buy used 4 SP Tip Box from USave Auto for 550 Sterling and fitting for 250 Euro. TOTAL: €1100
OPTION 2) Get my own Tip box (124,000KM) reconditioned (resealed, reclutched, repumped etc) TOTAL: €1500 from garage in Dublin thats done small number of FTOs before or €2000 from another Dublin garage that comes recommended as having done over 60 FTO's before.

If money was not the issue (hypothetically speking!) is the OPTION 2 better or just as unpredictable for future problems?

Please advise?

Thanks as always,

Adrian

Would there be much hassle with getting the tip box over from Usave? Or would the fitting happen in the UK? If not and you have someone to fit it (Daz?) then I'd go the Usave option.

Btw, sorry to hear the box is gone wallop - is it not driving now? What are the symptoms?

No, none. i work with a shipping company and the boss has told me he'll bring it for nothing as a favor.
"If not and you have someone to fit it (Daz?) then I'd go the Usave option."
A & M fitting it for 500 Euro or Pat Cassidy (autobox specialist in Dub that has done a few FTOs) for €350. Decision pending.

"is it not driving now? What are the symptoms?"
It is, still the same only slightly worse. Getting 2 speed sensors this week. Trying that. If not then it;s the box job I'm afraid.
So you'd still go for the used box then given my position as above???

If there is a guarantee with the Usave 2nd hand box I'd go with them - a lot could go wrong when someone pulls your existing box apart. Apart from it being cheaper it is a lot easier too - no messing about with small, fiddly, complicated internal gearbox parts.
