Wanted - starter motor

Postby kevinod » Thu Oct 02, 2008 8:05 pm

Looking for a starter motor for a GR. I doubt there's a difference between the GR & GPX/GPvR starters but not 100% sure.

Anyone? I'm in Cork, so it'll need to be posted down. I think I may need it in a hurry too so the sooner the better.

Kev.

I've got one that I took off and replaced with another second hand one that I bought from Steelroe. Then I found out that the starter wasn't the problem.

My Dad has even cleaned it all up and has it ready to install. Unfortunately it's in Galway and I won't be travelling down anytime soon.

Could post it I suppose - probably cost €10 or so.

Interesting, what were your symptoms? Mine varies each time I try to start it, sometimes, it'll start pretty ok, normal, but sometimes it'll just barely turnover like I have a flat battery. I put in a new bigger battery (55Ah, 420A - old one was 35Ah 175A) so that should be fine.

I was dodgy for a while and seemed to be getting worse every time I started the car, but then was fine for a few weeks again, and the last few days it's started acting up again.

You sure it's not a loose cable/connector on the starter? Check and check again - cause that's what mine did and it was grand...

Mine periodically didn't even turn over at all - eventually then it would engage and start. I thought it was the starter, but condition still existed once I had replaced it.

That dawned on me driving into town, thanks... I'll try to get a look at it tomorrow and see what the cables look like.

Ah ok, bit different to mine then. What fixed it eventually?

I'll check my wiring and will get back to you on that starter.

It was a loose wire / bad connection at the ignition itself.

Got under the car yesterday, starter is in a bit of an awkward spot! As far as I can tell the wiring was ok, but I didn't go as far as taking it off and cleaning the connections.

WD40 is your friend..

it's the wire that's on the terminal with the big nut you're after... give it's a spray - make sure there's good electrical contact and tighten the nut if you can..

I had a similar problem back in April a few days after I bought my GR. I got stuck in a multi-storey car park in Limerick!!

Tapping the starter with a hammer allowed me to start the car as the internal contacts in the motor were worn causing my problem.

I took out the motor and brought it to my local auto-electrician and he was even sound enough to show me how it worked and demonstrated how the internal contacts were worn. He refurbished the motor, which cost about €130. Its as good as new now!
