I have been looking at 911's... but then I have seen a few 944's that are making me think "am I mad" as they are lovely... what do folk think:

Not being able to afford a decent 944 (at the time) is what made me buy an FTO.
Still a brilliant looking car but I've seen a few really tatty examples of 80's models in the south-east. Made the pratts look like they only wanted the badge.
I would imagine you would have to spend a few quid to have a pristine model that would run well. Obviously an english import is the only way to go. Would love one myself but I had just passed my driving test in the late 80's when they were the dogs frolicks and really lusted after one. I lived near London at the time and every second wannabe had one before they were repossesed in 1990.

Dont forget a good GPX would leave a non turbo model for dead on the road.
I think I've mentioned before that I've a good GPX for sale.

Adrian -

If you want to keep an early 90's Porsche in good running order then its going to cost you - the initial purchase price will just seem like a small bill after a couple of years of running a 90's 911.

Sports cars have come a long way since the early 90's - your own S2000 would leave an early 90's 944 and probably a 911 for dead.

I looked at 944's a couple of years back when I bought my second FTO and tbh its true what they say - you should never meet your heros - all clean UK models but just looked dated and drove poorly.

The 944 wouldn't be a model I'd go for - I'd say comapred to the S2000 it would be a let down as it would be no-where near as dynamic. I drove a few here - their not very fast and they were very heavy to drive. Compared to the 911 they're night and day with the 911 being streets ahead.

And MfFTO is right - it would probably cost to keep on the road, a lot more so than the 911 as they don't have the same ownership experience (i.e. in general their owners don't tend to take as good care of them).

I dunno... I reckon if you get one with a good rebuild etc already done it should last well with a bit of maintanence....especially if it was only doing about 4k miles a year...no??

Eh No - Not exactly - For instance - you buy an early 90's 993 - and a couple of weeks in you find that you need to replace the front suspension bushes - no problem - whats that gonna cost - small money for an FTO - but for a 911/993? - Its not possible to replace them separately which means having to buy the lower arms and you'll do well to see any change from 2K. At this age I wouldn't be surprised to find some small oil leaks and the gearbox synchros will likely be worn. What cost to sort that out?- None of the above are big problems but they are all very costly problems.

Thats not to say that I wouldn't buy a nice 911/993 if I was only going to do 4K miles a year. Just go into it with your eyes wide open - Why is the buyer selling his "pristine 911/993" ??

Hers a few others I came across for 8-12K GBP - some make less sense than others.
1) E34 M5's - 7K GBP

2) Racing Puma - 8K GBP (I used to own one - fab little cult car)

3)Lancia Delta Integrale - 8K - 10K GBP

4) Lotus Elise - 8K - 10K GBP

Cheers for that, some interesting motors there... to add to my confusion! :D

And a good point you make about the bills I could face.... I am gonna do more homework on the whole thing anyway. Thanks all.
