I'm after starting something here I'd no intention of. Everyone is entilted to their own opinion. Besides it depends on what your plans for the car are. And mine would be to keep it long term and mod it myself. I intended on keeping my gs auto and buying a GPX as a project and doing it up mysef. I have an idea what I'd like and thats a white facelift manual GPX. As I intend leaving it white not much point buying any other colour.
With my car being nicked I'm trying to decide what to do now and I'm just thinking out loud (or in writing as the case maybe).
I've a choice either buy it as a project, or buy one for now with nothing to do to it. If I go for this option I'd deffo consider Rob's(CJ's old one) I'd be mad not to. It all depends on how much I get from the insurance I'm not expecting much. Besides it takes that long to get sorted with insrance it'd probably be gone by the time that happens.

I was wondering about that, how long does it need to be before the insurance declare it stolen and agree to pay out?

My car was recovered in ballyfermott, I was told last night. Supposed to be very little damage according to the guy in ITS(Irish Towing Services). But they hit the womans car across the road so I'm expecting there to be some.
I'm just wondering, as I'm covered TPFT am I covered for the damage. I'm with Quinn. I've been told TPFT only covers the car being robbed and burned out, not damage done to it, so I'l get nothing according to a friend. Does anyone know how this works?

As far as I am aware your friend is correct. If it is stolen and recovered they will not cover damage.
Which is totally wrong as you were not responsible in any way for the damage caused.
Hopefully the scumbags just ran out of petrol and left it with minimal damage

As per Rorys post..

any damage to your car isn't covered under the 3rd party theft and fire policy..

With a bit of luck it'll be minor..

i think there will be an assesor from the insurrance company if you claimed already .

i'm afraid you'll only get something if the car is totaled .
keep us posted

I think they will cover damage. The claims assesor wanted to have the car towed to one of their approved garages to check the damage. Cant see them doing that unless they are going to pay. I'm collecting it myself first to check for anything of value left in it. Hoping my tools are still there, although even if the thieves left them that doesn't guarentee they'll be there now. But fingers crossed.

Well guys - an update on the stolen FTO saga. Could be completely unrelated but someone just tried to rob mine parked on Maxwell Street off Cork Street, round the back of where I work. They tanned the lock in on the passenger side and tried to get in from there, the alarm went off and someone came out and scared them off.

I only drove in today as I'm heading out to DTAS after work to get two new tyres fitted!

Anyway, I've now to replace the left hand door handle and possibly the lock mechanism so if anybody can point me in the right direction I'd be delighted to know.

And I'd be very wary of where you leave your FTO from now on! Mines has a Toad alarm and immobiliser, think I'll get myself a wheel lock as well now.

Yeah that was me, the car is F*$"ed. I reckon its a right off, not that I know how much it would cost to repair it, but guessing I reckon the guts of 2k-3k anyway, judging by what I got quoted to get my bumper and dented wing fixed in a garage (€750) and there's atleast 3 or 4 times as much damage. Will see what the assesor says tomorrow?
They took most of my tools, left my multi-meter and 2 screwdrivers. DVD player gone. CDs all gone.
The swines!!

Anyway, I've now to replace the left hand door handle and possibly the lock mechanism so if anybody can point me in the right direction I'd be delighted to know

I dont know if you want to go down this route but your insurance company will prob cover you for that. I know from reading my policy it covers for new keys and locks from damage done through attempted break-in/robbery. It doesn't affect your NCB either which is a good thing. You could check with your ins company/broker to see if your is the same. I know it not that much to fix it but why spend money if you dont have to?

Scumbags! Is it just bodywork damage? Might be cheaper to just replace the wing. The car didn't look too bad when I saw you.

Mostly body work yeah. But the steering seemed to be a it dodgy as well, but that might be just from the buckled alloys. Although by the state of the alloys I'd be surprised if the wish bone, shocks etc aren't damaged. They must have hit the kerb at some speed coz the alloy on the front passenger side has a buckle between the 2 spokes that must sit in atleast 1.5".
All the usual stuff with regard to damaged locks, ignition etc as well. Its in a poor state to be honest. I think I'd rather it was damaged to a point where repairs would be more than the value of the car. Dont think I'd feel the same about driving a repaired car.

Get a main dealer to quote for the repair parts and when the insurance complany see the high cost of parts they will declare it "un-economical ro repair", i.e. repair cost exceeds 70% value of the vehicle, thay will then pay out on the insurance.

I will do that so. Although they want to use their own approved garage to fix it. I'l do both and hopefully it'll scare them into paying to replace it. I know I was shocked when I priced a few bits in the local mitsi garage. 500+ for the centre piece for the exhaust.

karl beware of the so called "approved insurance repairer" someone on here had very bad experience with the workmanship of a repair job by one of these approved garages. Cant remember exactly who but I am sure one of the guys on here will know.

If you're worried about the job the approved garage will do you could ask around about them, find out if they're reliable.

I thought once the car is repaired that you had to sign off on it. If the job isnt done to satisfaction you just dont sign and it has to be done again....or is this just how it should be?

Sorry to hear its in such a bad state karl.

If they do want to repair it (sounds unlikely to me) I'd try and take an expert with you to look at the work when its done. If its not 100% don't accept it.

You should be in no better/worse positon then you were prior to the incident so its perfectly within your rights to get every niggly little bit taken care of. If they can't afford to fix it properly then it's a write-off.

Hope it ends up in your favour whatever happens.
Get out of here Nebulon! No one likes your style...

Just a thought, if the insurance company deem the repair uneconomical, will they leave the car with you?

A friend of mine had his car written off and his insurer (Hibernian I think) left him with the car & paid out. He flogged it off for parts.

Could help raise funds towards a replacement car or replacement tools.

Silver lining maybe :?:
