Soundproof your car for €13

Postby CJ » Tue Sep 23, 2003 8:40 am

I installed an amp and replaced all 6 speakers recently, the result was great sound quality with plenty of rattles, especially from the rear. Seeing as I'll be installing a sub soon, I decided to do a bit of soundproofing on the cheap. Rather then waste money on Dynamat or Brown Bread, I went down the local hardware store and picked up a 10M roll of Flashband for 13 quid. Its bitumen based and is adhesive on one side. I covered the whole of the underside of the boot lid (nice 'clunk' when closed), the firewall between the rear seats and the boot, the underside of the rear speaker shelf and the underside of the rear plastic speaker cover (where grills are).
All my speaker vibration has completely disappeared from the rear, and surprisingly, all the rattleing and banging that the FTOs rear end is prone to is also gone. Its comparible to the change in feel when swapping out an old set of droplinks.

I have a good bit of Flashband left over so I'll be doing the front doors this evening to remove some minor vibration at the front end, hopefully the same result can be achieved.

Its the best 13 quid I ever spent and its a worthwhile exercise if only to help dull down the FTOs noisey ar$e ;)

I am guessing thats what you put in the GS Shane?
When pulling apart the car to wire up the new stereo, I found almost every bit of exposed metal covered in this stuff. Would explain why I never hear the rattles and stuff you guys are talking about.
The back window is the only one that makes weird noises when the sub is on.

CJ, where did you get the flashband? Would most DIY places do it? Woodies?

Most hardware stores should stock it, I got it at my local one down the road.

Not at all, this stuff is very pliable to work with. The brand name I used was 'Black Jack'.

I used Black Jack flash band as well and it did a fine job. You can buy it in 4 inch € 13 or 6 € 17 inch rolls both 10 m long. I would advise one of each €30 and you will have enough to do the whole boot and both front doors.

Among other things, its used in roofing to cover up gaps between flashing and brickwork.

Its not too heavy, doing both doors and the boot will add maybe 3 or 4 kilos to the weight of the car.

heavy duty velcro straps, got them out of my job. was thinking of getting small l shaped brackets , put one in each corner and secure it to the wooden boot panel. cos i know them straps will not last long

you'd want to be securing it properly if you don't want rattles. the boot floor hardboard is especially rattly.

Taking the rear seats out and wrapping insulating tape around the hangers for the seat back will help, as will removing the parcel shelf and putting insulation under it. The armrest panels in the back (under the window and beside the rear seat) should be packed out too as these can rattle.

the boot floor rests on the plastic boot tray which in turn is bolted to the floor.
