[FTO MEET] Lahinch surf meet [16th/17th May 2009]

Something that occured to me today, a slightly unusual idea for a meet, so just want to gauge interest levels... Would anyone be on for a surf weekend?

Only a very rough idea as yet, but I'll gladly look into booking the necessary if we have people on for it. I was thinking we meet up in the usual mini-convoys and head for Lahinch (Co. Clare). Can arrange surf lessons for the afternoon (its more really for the board hire than anything else) which are about €40 for 2 hours (might be less with a group discount). Either grap a cuppa or soup after (the warmth is great after a spell in the old Atlantic), and then to a nice B&B or cheap hotel in Lahinch or a small road trip to somewhere close by. Shower, and then out for a bite to eat and a pint. Ok, maybe we'll go mad and have 2.

Anyway, generally merriment will be had I'm sure, and video's taken to blackmail each other with in the future, and then we'll have Sunday to recover and maybe even a nice drive before we go our ways.

I was thinking it might be nice to do something like this before a certain someone heads down under (keep the dirty comments to yourselves :) ), but with the UK meet on early May, there's a small enough window, so the provisional date would be 23/24th May.

Anywho, its an idea any, so any feed back is welcome, as long as its positive. :D

If there's a meet on I'll be there, I'd be staying on dry land though.

Sounds good to me, I'm up for it! Think I'll give the surfing a miss, cold water may actually kill me, I'm such a perisher.

The old reliables, nice one guys. :D

The ability to swim is not a prerequisite for surfing, I'm still not a good swimmer, and loved surfing when I used do it. Anyway, more about that later, I'll be doing my best to get a few more of ye in the water. :smt079

For now, just want to get an idea of numbers before I make a few calls.

I would have been really on for that - I dive off lahinch quite often - BUT Maria will be ready to pop around that date (plus the Heineken Cup final is on that weekend) so I'll never be let out of the house.

i did this last year and it was a brillent weekend. i did three 2 hour lessons over two days it was 90 yoyo and i camped in doolin about half an hour drive + its past the cills of moher. i think it was 24 euro for the tent for two nights which aint bad. oh and the water aint bad with a wet suit incuded in the lessons.

If there's enough interest (which seems likely), we can always tweak the dates. When you heading away MJ?

As johntony says, temperature really isn't an issue, wetsuits are provided, so you will be quite comfortable in that respect (that being said, the cup of tea from a plastic thermos cup after is fantastic! ). As for fun factor, you can ask anyone who has every tried, I've yet to meet someone who hasn't enjoyed it.

Doolin is another option alright, as is camping. Thanks for the suggestions.

Not sure yet, thinking of the start of June but might be earlier, as in the start of May, havent booked my tickets yet but dont go changing dates on my behalf if everyone else settles on a weekend suitable.

It'd be good to coincide the meet with a fair well "party" type thing too though!

Not sure on dates, but I'd probably go along to a meet in Lahinch, think I'd give the surfing a miss though. Even with a wet suit the Atlantic is just too cold for my money at any time of the year full stop.
There's also the danger I might actually like it, and then become a surf waster, and rant about how good the waves are, and use "man" or "dude" in all my sentences. :)

Any confirmation of dates/numbers? I'll have to sort getting work off this week if im going to make it at all... I was actually in Lahinch last night with friends. They did the surfing lessons today and said it was great craic. I had to head back for work so i missed it... BUT on the interesting side... We rented a house a 5/10min walk from the town for €250 for the weekend. 3 bedrooms, one double and 2 twin rooms. This an option? I know some of the more mature people might not like the idea of everyone packed into the one house but would be good night id say...?
