Jaguar XKR

Postby CJ » Mon Oct 15, 2012 11:41 am

I found myself browsing Carzone the other day with a focus on big engined motors that are cheap to buy because no one wants to pay monster car tax to keep the damn things on the road. I came across a couple of Jaguar XKR's and then realised I know absolutely nothing about them (apart from being supercharged and sharing the chassis with the DB7). Anyone driven a late 90's model or had experiences good or bad they'd like to share? Oh and in case you're wondering, I'd be more likely to buy a 350Z rather than an XKR...

Haven't seen any XKR's for sale in Ireland - just XK8s. Either way I'm sure the running costs would be fairly substantial in comparision to a 350Z/S2000 etc. Having said that they really are poles apart - the Jaguar is nowhere near a sports car but has presence and a far classier interior than any Jap sports car. Really comes down to what you want from your car - I can certainly see the attraction in running an XK8 - theres a couple on donedeal that caught my eye -

Something else to consider-
BMW 6 series - http://cars.donedeal.ie/for-sale/cars/3977271
Audi S4 - http://cars.donedeal.ie/for-sale/cars/3781238

Where my money would go -
AMG - http://cars.donedeal.ie/for-sale/cars/3557912

Theres a handful of XKRs on Carzone (just one on Donedeal), I like the idea of them but have never had the pleasure of driving one to get an impression of the driving dynamics and experience. I know that earlier engines were made from cheese but later (>02) were much more reliable. Like any Jag, you need to be prepared for a large bill at some point (reminds me of my RX7 / 8 days) but arguably, you're getting an Aston Martin-like experience without the cost associated with such a marque.

I like the idea of the S4 but I'm gone right off Audis - they're everywhere. 6 series could be an interesting buy for the money but I'm not sure about the styling. That CL55 looks very interesting indeed, and a whole lot of fun to boot no doubt. The 350Z is proven and bullet proof and looks great in my view, you just can't go wrong for the money. Realistically, If I were buying something for all year round fun, I'd have to go 4WD, problem here is the limited choice to choose from in terms of affordable big engined 4WD coupes...

Am I missing something? I saw 3 XKR's on DD. A 99, 05 & 07. Nice motor. The 6 series would be my choice there.

I have travelled in the XK before but wouldn't be a big fan tbh. The cabin is tiny and overall the machine didn't do much for me.

I really like the newer shape and the sound of the V8 is to die for on these. I would still take a 6 series or that AMG above the Jag any day though.

Price on that Merc is unreal alright - imagine what that thing cost new - probably €120-130k or so?

Totally agree but I reckon it would tougher to insure than an FTO (if that were possible). UK FTO grouping is 20, CL54 comes in at 50 (highest possible rating - same as XKR), 6 series comes in at 45 for comparison. Anyone want to give Liberty a call for the craic?!
