Ever stuck in a painful meeting?

Postby Bernard » Wed Aug 19, 2009 12:47 pm

This might help ease the pain... It amused me anyway

I reckon I can mark off at least 10 blocks during an average daily meeting, does it count if all of the phrases come out of your own mouth?

That's an issue you might want to take ownership of going forward, just a heads up

Agreed, I hope to take a holistic, cradle-to-grave approach vis-a-vis the linguistics. Thanks for the insight Bernard, we need more upscaled blue-sky thinkers like you around the place. We can touch base offline if required - call me on my cell.

Oh if I had a euro for every time I heard 'going forward' I'd be a rich woman.

I mean, is it something you're taught before you become a manager? If so I must have missed out somewhere along the way...

Maybe I'm a failure!!

Low-hanging fruit,
e-tailing,
talk off-line,
blue-sky idea,
win-win situation,
think outside the box,
holistic approach,
level playing field,
sanity check,
put to bed,
whole nine yards,
helicopter view,
gap analysis,
touch base,
rain check,
sing from the same hymn sheet,
finger in the air,
get in bed with, big picture,
benchmark,
ball park,
ticks in all the right boxes,
strategic fit,
bread and butter

Its often dependant on industry in my experience. This lingo is rife in corporates, especially US multinationals. The Europeans jumped on the biz speak mumbo-jumbo bandwagon a few years ago - its easy to get sucked in regardless of your inability to string a phrase together. MBA programs are also guilty of speading this style of lingo, now everyone is at it.

There are better ways to cultivate synergistic discussion to incentivise bleeding-edge communication, theres no need for all of this crap talk.

Uh, pet hate of mine. If you can't explain something in simple terms, you don't really understand it. Some people seem to camouflage their inability with it.

Now some clients do seem to respond to the use of this language, so some phone calls with flowery language do tend happen. We have an open plan office though, so staff do get a lot of stick after said phone calls. Its a running joke at this stage.
