IRISH BOYS...HELP HELP!

Postby adrian » Sun May 25, 2003 5:37 pm

Hi all,

Looks like it finally happening,....what I have been reading about on the groups in the UK. My tip box seems fecked?! Basically, when I select drive it engages staright away immediately but when I accelerate it judders in 1st like it is slipping...until I rev out after 3K rpms. Other gears seem fine although it juddered in 3rd last night when I accelerated. Also, might help you diagnose, when I sit in 1st with the handbrake on it judders every 10 seconds or so...like it's loosing traction, and then grips again. Happens EVERY TIME since yesterday.

Wat will I do? I have reset the ECU. No different. I had the filter and dextron III oil changed 4,000KM ago and added zx1 also. What else could it be?

How much is a manual conversion? Would I have to go to the UK for this lads? OH please please help....my baby seems so ill.

WOuld you recommend ANYONE in Dublin or that area that might look at the box and know what they are talking about?

It's a 1995, 4sp GS TIP box...124,000 KMs

Thanks everyone,

Adrian

Dosn't sound all that good Adrian. You should bring it to Paul in Artane to see if he can do anything with it, otherwise its a box swap out. You could also get it hooked up to a MUT-II to see if its a problem with gearbox sensors or something else that can be replaced.

Good luck!

OK, where can I get it MUT tested in Dublin? Also, whats the story with gearbox specialists in Dublin that you would trust with your FTO?

How much am I talking for a manual conversion....how much for a new Tip box and where the hell would I go looking for a new box?!

Thanks again,

A

Sorry to hear this Adrian

I dunno much about the auto gearbox but AFAIK there is some form of clutch in the FTO's autobox (but don't quote me on this). I remember when I bought the car he told me not to sit in traffic in drive cause it would burn the clutch out. Sounds to me that your problem is clutch related - can anyone confirm/deny if the FTO has some form of clutch?

I suppose Paul Nolan would be the guy to talk to - never used him but he does come recommended from other FTO owners.

Iif you're interested I always go to a garage in Lusk called Kellys - the guy running the place (Paul) is pretty clued up on autoboxes in general cause he's a big Merc fan and only goes for auto's. You could ring them (8437276) and see if Paul knows anything off the top of his head - ask for Paul and tell him I gave you the number.

If you're gonna go the conversion route you should get a manual - I'd say the UK is you're best bet - go to someone who has experience of this conversion - check on smartgroups

Just called Paul Nolan. He does not do gearbox work but recommended A & M Gearbox Centre, near Guinness.

Anyone dealt with these lads?

Also, how much to get a MUT II diagnostics done?

Adrian, check this post which mentions a few garages who have a MUT-II:

http://www.fto-ireland.com/forum/phpBB2 ... c.php?t=12

No harm giving them a call to check prices. I havn't come across that gearbox crowd but if Paul recommends tham, they're probably good.

OK lads,

Michael Tynan has one...€40 to get tested but he says that it has failed to read FTO's loads of times before.

I'll give it a go sure.

UPDATE:

I found a place in Dublin that does the MUT II test for the imports as Michael Tynan Motors could not read the FTO. He's Pat Cassidy on 087 9230669

The following were faults:

Speed Inout SN
Speed Output SN
APS

The lad did not know what APS was. He is an autobox specialist here in Dublin and seemed to think that my problem was not a box problem but an engine misfire/juddering problem. Needs further investigation. He's an honest chap from the sounds of it and did not try to sell me the job. €1,500 from him for a full re-con....€2000 from A & M.

Adrian,

Any chance this feels like a misfire? I had a problem where at the beginning the car misfired when pulling off initially and this then developped into a full on misfire in all gears at all speeds under 3k - 3.5k rpm - turned out plugs needed cleaning.

Note that at idle there was no problem because the plugs/ignition leads were not under stress - it started as only being there when pulling off and then accelerating and then all speeds and gears. I was supposed to get new ignition leads too cause I think they are on the way out but to be honest I just go lazy and just cleaned the plugs -

try having a look at the plugs tonight.

Shane,

Was it like a JUDDERING when moving off. Did it happen in reverse too?

Michael Tynan motors told me they'd give me 6K for the car against a new L200 pickup...I like them...and that leave them at 21,500 for me new....just shy of 17K punts. Tempted....but I wanna wait out a year or two so I can get the S2000.

Hey Daz, any chance you could do some sort of write up on tip boxes going bad - for others in the future.

Don't remember any problem with reverse but I never actually thought it was the gearbox at the time - engine was only firing on 3 cylinders so the whole car did shake/judder.

Michael Tynan motors told me they'd give me 6K for the car against a new L200 pickup...I like them...and that leave them at 21,500 for me new....just shy of 17K punts. Tempted....but I wanna wait out a year or two so I can get the S2000.

6k for the car with dodgy gearbox or without?

6K is a good price from a dealer so sounds like Michael Tynan's are pretty ok (where are they based?) - the guy from Annesly offered me 3K for mine when I was looking at the Golf GTI - I bite my tongue and quietly decided I wouldn't be doing business with him!

Are Michael Tynan a Mitsu dealer?

Yea, They are a Mitsi Dealer in Newlans Cross. Red Cow roundabout, head for Naas and it's down beside Bewleys Hotel on the right hand side less then a mile down that road.

The 6K was with good gearbox...he said he traded in a 1995 GS last week and gave 6K for it.

It didn't do it this morning when cold. What would this tell me about the problem? If it was a misfire, due to (for exmaple) strain on worn leads when under load, would it not also happen when cold? It was happening when I got to work...after about 15 minutes drive.

Also, I have been told to change the speed sensors (as they showed up in a MUT II test)...would the fact it doesn't happen when cold also rule out the speed sensors?
