Hi,

Given the huge amount of information on the FTO-Ireland site, I'm wondering if the site could benefit from having a wiki added.

A wiki could be a great thing here, since it would allow people to post and query information in a structured way, as an alternative to the forums which suffer numerous problems, such as:
* information is scattered throughout the threads in often random fashion
* searching is often difficult - for example, there is no phrase search
* forum topics appear in a flat list, with no hierarchy

Adding a wiki would hugely boost the value of this site IMHO.

Thoughts?

While I like the collaborative idea of a Wiki, I'm not sure how it could build on the content thats already part of the forum, from what I understand, you would need to start from scratch. Having 2 seperate resources (i.e. a forum and a wiki) would create confusion.

I did about 2 years ago and it was removed. Wikipedia changed its rules banning the addition of website addresses in wikis, althouth I see they appear to be creeping back in again.

It need not confuse.

A wiki allows information to be arranged in a structured way that's really easy to access, while a forum is pretty hodge-podge.

For an analogy - a wiki is like a well organised library with a catalogue, and books organised into their shelves in a tidy manner. A forum is like the ripped-out pages of books strewn all over the floor in a pile 1 metre high - some in labelled folders, some not.

A wiki can be easily installed into this site under the address http://www.fto-ireland.com/wiki. There are heaps of free, easy-to-install PHP-based wiki packages to choose from.

Also, a wiki, once installed, can be gradually evolved towards full content. There's no need to have it perfect straight away. Initially, pages in the wiki could contain pertinent links into the forum, but over time, these links can be replaced with actual content.

Believe me, with a wiki, people will be able to find info in a quarter of the time or less than it takes to trawl through the forums.

There are thousands of successful specialist wikis all over the web. Just google on 'wiki' to see some examples.

I don't mean to be a sceptic - I generally like new-fangledness - but the forum isn't really that difficult to search.. Like this morning I had to take the 2nd car to work cause the fto wouldn't budge..
I thought it was the alternator as it sounded like the starter wasn't getting enough juice - and I observed 10volts on the voltmeter..
This evening I diagnose the problem to be the starter - as when I apply jump leads and turn the key starter still isn't going..

I use the search function type in "starter" and find a thread from 2007 about somebody with a similar issue..throught the thread I find where the starter is located - I give it a light tap with an adjustable force applicator device - problem solved..

headscratching 30mins
starting laptop 3mins ( I really should reinstall!)
locating post 2mins
applying force - 3secs

It sounds like a fair bit of work replicating and sorting all the posts again..I think an easier solution would be perhaps to rename threads once a solution has been found to ensure all threads have an exact & descripting title..

that's just me though..
