How to change gear knob in manual? Which knobs fit FTO?

Postby Bartpabicz » Mon Jun 20, 2011 11:58 pm

Hi everyone,

Could someone help me out here? I need to change the gear knob in my GPX (manual). Did anyone do that before? I heard it needs to be twisted anti-clockwise, but I prefer to be sure.

Also, do you happen to know which knobs fit FTOs? I mean, do they have to be specifically manuactured for FTOs, or ones meant for other makes/models will fit as well? I don't really know if they are all generic, so if they are, disregard that question altogether :D

Thanks in advance for your help guys!

just ''unscrew'' it from the stick.

Any know would fit as long as you rebore the pattern . The universal ones have a tightening screw at their base so no need for that .

rebore as in re-make the thread in the knob? If so, I'd be stuck at this point as I have no tools nor knowledge how to do it properly. What knobs would fit an FTO, straight from the factory? Would Galant knobs do for example, or Carisma? How to check if the knobs fit or not? I hope it's not trial-and-error? :o

Why don't you find a knob you like and take it from there to check fitment. All Momo for example have locking nuts at the bottom so they don't screw on to the existing thread.

I can't imagine that a Carisma knob would look too good, nor a Galant for that matter.

I'd.stick with a factory knob from another car. Most Asian cars have the same fitment.
Something leather will look great.

Most sporty ones look awful. And some awful cars have great gearknobs. Hyundais often have great ones. The atoz has a black one with red stitching (around 2007)
