Renewal time

Hi,

that time of the year, my renewal is coming up in a few weeks, so got the quote - €1120. AA with Royal & Sun Alliance. 31 (when renewal is due), 3 years no claims (but 55% discount), full licence 11 years, no points. When I rang them they said that was the best they could do, even reducing the value on the car a few quid.

2 quotes so far, Quinn €753 and Britton €1300, hopefully get a few more quotes this afternoon.

Some feicers won't quote because of a claim over X euro within the last 5 years, Hibernian weren't quoting for the FTO, but the girl I was talking to on the phone couldn't understand why and was supposed to be sussing it out and getting back to me. Weird, a 'standard FTO' was going through but as soon as she put letters after FTO it started complaining. She seemed to think the GR was one of the highest loaded ones for some reason! :?

The quest continues...

thats so weird lads. Insurance companies seem so fickle in this sense. Sometimes you can insure an FTO sometimes not.
When I got Quinn I noticed that GPX was the same as GPvR in cost, so I insured as she is GPvR.

Ok... a few more

Eagle Star, refused FTO
McCarthy Insurance - €1886!!!

'AIB' Car insurance is actually Hibernian
Tesco insurance is actually Hibernian too
FBD refused to quote based on <35 yo and <5 years ncb
AXA refused too.

running out of options, but at least the Quinn direct one sounds good. The only downside of that is they won't offer protection (<5 years no claims), so hoping I can get something with protection in that neighbourhood, given that quote.

I was insured on my FTO with hibernian for a couple of years - they don't seem to have any clue about model designation though - quotes were all over the place dependant upon what model type you gave when I checked with my local friendly broker.

Britton were wanting to renew me for 670 TPFT, but I got a quote of 510 from Quinn-Direct online. When I told them this they matched it. This was 2 months ago. Actual Insurer is St Paul Travelers.

I have a couple of years on you in age and license years, but would have thought that they can do better than that.

Hibernian sent me a quote in the post, €1183 I think it was, more than my renewal anyway, but at least they did quote afterwards even after the girl telling me they didn't quote for the FTO.

Must try a few more today, and give the AA/Royal Sun Alliance a shout and see if they'll bring their quote down to come closer to Quinn Direct...

This isn't a plug or anything, but would it not make sense to just ring a competent broker and they check the market for you in one go rather than you ringing several insurers? But i do know, there's probably not much out there that are going to touch quinn with respect to price...

Well unfortunately it doesn't seem to work like that. Ring 2 brokers and you'll get 2 very different answers, ring a broker & the insurance company they get a quote for you with directly, and its hit and miss who is cheaper.

AA is supposedly a broker, got me a quote of 1120. McCarthy's insurance (aka bestquote.ie) also brokers, got me a quote of 1800+.

So I'm ringing the insurance companies and brokers. Open to any suggestions of anyone else that might give me, (be happy to ring your guys Dave and see what they say).

Not having a go at anyone, and not trying to be smart, but I believe individual brokers don't get the best deal for YOU, they get the best deal for THEM. Thats business I guess.

well that's not entirely true Kev, firstly, there are more brokers involved with Bestquote, we are one of those too, there are approx 7 brokers in the country that make that up. As for getting the best deal for "us", i wouldn't say that's true either, we don't get the business unless the customer is happy, but i would admit, ringing directly can definitely produce different quotes, but you have to remember, the public don't have access to some insurers, StPaul do not deal with the public, only brokers, ARB are another one, and they specialise in higher risk, PM your number and i'd be more than happy to have someone give you shout, but as i said before, i doubt Quinn's price will be beaten.

Can I just put in my 2cents here please..

even within the same company there can be differences..

I'm with eagle star who would quote me in the 1st place..
2nd time I rang them I rang a galway number instead of the dublin one..

...presto...

I'm up for renewal in september..oh the fun!

well all brokers get their rates via their software provider, who in turn gets them from the insurer's, each broker may be on different rates depending on their relationships with said insurers...

Ah ok, Mccarthy's had "McCarthy Bestquote" on their website so I took that to mean it was just their marketing name.

I'm probably not being entirely fair to all the brokers in saying they just get the best deal for them, generalisations are never always true and all that, but thats the impression I get. As I said, I'm not having a go at anyone, its just business, but when there's nothing like consistency between brokers, when there's only so many insurance companies in the market, you have to start asking yourself why. Taking the example I have here - how McCarthys can expect to be taken seriously with their quote of 1800+ vs 1300/1187/1122/753 I just don't know.

After a bit of to-ing and fro-ing I got an excellent quote from Eagle Star through Britton insurance, €708 fully comp. I'm 29 with a full license & NCB.
That was back in February but it couldn't have changed that much.

All I need now is the car...

It's very tempting but I'd say I'll go for a GPX, These guys were recommended to me, to source one...
