Feel for ya Bernard, all I can say is good luck with the process and I hope you're looked after redundancy wise.

Sorry to hear that! If you let us know what area you are in we could keep an ear out and let you know if anything opens up anywhere.

Like most people I have the perception that redundancy is something that happens to 'other people'. It really brings the reality home when people you actually know start loosing their jobs. I don't think I could fully appreciate what it would be like to be one of those 'other people'. I really feel for you, hope it works out ok for you both. Between this and the uncertainty over Waterford and Tara mines it's a fairly grim start to '09

Agree totally. I've been on the other side of the desk in terms of breaking the news of redundancy to staff members. Tough as it is, it pales into insignificance when you consider the feelings of the person being made redundant at that point in time.

Sorry to hear bernard, hopefully something will crop up for you regardless.
Our place has been letting people go for the last few months as well, 2 more yesterday, doesnt sound much but theres now only 20 there when there was 40 a few months ago. Its when you really know the person and the consequences it has that it hits home how harsh it is.

Thanks for all the comments lads.

They're offering 6 weeks pay for every year of service but it's being capped at a 52 weeks.
It's actually working out cheaper for them the longer you've been there:

The government are paying 2 weeks per year, not capped.
Dell are paying 4 weeks but the whole lot is capped at 52 so the government's percentage contribution rises with your tenure.

Clever aren't they?

Saw a mention on the news that shift allowance wasn't being taken into consideration either?

Was working for one company about 2002, when we knew there was going to be some redundancies but they wouldn't say who. We had to wait during the day while people who were being let go were called one by one to come down to the HR office to collect their redundancy. Absolute agony, waiting in case you were called, and feeling for the people who were. 6 months to a year later and the office was closed down completely anyway.

Around that time a place downstairs from us closed down, out of the blue, no redundancy, nothing. They turned up Monday morning and their jobs were just gone. The staff took whatever furniture they could out of the office but that was it.

Did herself fare any better?

Our place is the same at the moment. We let go 5 June last year first, then 12 in Sept. Worst day I have ever worked, we knew the day before how many were going, and was waiting and watching people get calls all the following day, horrible stuff. Thats when it hit home for me, seeing your colleagues/friends that gutted. Now we know there are more going in Feb, (office will be half the size at that stage) so you never know Bernard, might see you in the post office. To be fair, I count myself very lucky in that I've not got a mortgage or kids. Just feel terrible for those with responsibilities in this situation who have something to loose. :(

It's looking like between June and July for herself, but she's not been there as long as me.
I'd say we'll find out more in the next week or so, but to be honest I'm relieved.
All that speculation was the worst part, I'm sure things will work out OK.

Sorry to hear that Bernard :( , the only way to think of these things is that its just a change which will work out in the long term!
Our crowd (EMC) announced 7% cut in workforce yesterday (details to follow) but Id say that's just the thin end of the wedge!

Sorry to hear this Bernard. We just took a 4.4% wage decrease here this week, and a cap on annual days of 220... last year I worked 235 days to it's quite a hit on daily rate. Still, lucky yo still have a job. (I.T. Contracting) so can;t complain too much

Old thread alert.

Sorry to drag this up again but we've just got a mail from the top.
It's the usual self spamming that dell does but I thought I'd post it here for the laugh.
You'd think they'd filter some of it but no, nice to see they're doing well

BTW, I tried to reply to it but got the following error.

Thats sickening, they're laying everyone off yet have these massive profits??!! And what good is it sending that stuff to people who are about to lose possibly 2 incomes a household? Do they think they'll be grateful and happy that Dell are doing so well? Stupid.

I know Bernard you had told me about this before, but I can't believe just how bad it is.

The lack of sensitivity really is astounding. For the business they're in, you'd think they'd know how to filter emails? :x
