Bloody hell - car prices in Ireland are a joke

Postby soc » Fri May 23, 2003 10:40 am

I was browsing the uk's autotrader website..... I cannot believe that you could pick up a '99 Honda S2000 for as little as 14,000 sterling!!!! Even with the difference in exchange ratest that is only about 18,000 euro!!!!!

What a joke - the equivalent car over here would set up back an easy 45,000 euro thanks to tax on cars.

Anyone know what the legalities are regarding irish cat tax under the EU - I would have thought that with the EU (single european market and all that) we would have similar prices for cars accross all countries. Anyone know where I might get more info on this? I'd like to know what the EU actually think of this whole senario.

I know, its sickening. I have been on the lookout for a S2000 for a while now but I've seen nothing that I remotely afford. There are a number of lobby groups who have been presurising the government to drop VRT, its an illegal tax in the EUs eyes so I reckon it will have to be abolished at some stage. That said, this loss in revenue to the government will most likely be levied in some other fashion, be it car tax, petrol tax or some other method of screwing car owners. Heres a good article on the subject:
