work has begun

Postby Daz » Mon May 30, 2016 11:31 pm

Well work started in earnest this wknd. I'm not going to lie i ain't doing all the work (like i would of done back in the days) hell i'm not even doing most of it. As it is one of the lads i work with is an ex mechanic and he'll be doing most of the work. Reason being i'll have my kids in the car and i want it to be done perfect.....

Anyway before we started i gave it thd once over and looked at the brakes... discs rusted ta f**k, and figured they'd be seized, So decided to order all new discs drilled and groved front and back mintex shoes all round and new calipers all round... shouldn't of bovered thou...thru car up on stands this wknd and cus car parked in gear and blocks on the wheels... a small bit of force and all discs moved and brakes still worked...so could just get away with new pads... but have everything bought now and everything bar rear calipers have arrived. So will probably fit all new gear.

And so onto the rust hunt. Bumpers off all looking good there but could do with some new front arch liners but unable to find any for sale as yet. My mates been all under the car with a hammer all looking sound so far but the rear arches is a different matter. There are plates covering the ends of the drop rails these plates make up part of the wheel arch its the plate with the rubber bung in it... which the manufactures sometime use to fill the drop rails with wax. Now mine are starting to rust around the bung and a tap with the hammer caved one in but the drop rails look ok from underneath but sideskirts gonna have to come off to make fully sure. Hopefully get away with cutting plate away and welding a new one in... issue is wheel arch not undersealed like underneath so probably why it got dammage.. will get underseal treatment this time round thou. And going to get wire attachment for drill and clean whole under car to be fully sure no rust thru any stone chip damage to present seal and redo the lot.

Also being red it faded in the sun... but mate tested a patch with G3 and sofar has come up a treat now to wait and see if it lasts.

Interiour sound and as full leather. Will be easy to clean and get upto scratch...

Got home and mate just finishing up for the day. Started refitting body panels after, he's happy the drop rails are ok just the rear end plates with rubber bung rusted and to be cut out and new plates welded in. But thinks hes found a tiny patch of surface rust, somewhere in the middle of the underside. But untill i get under there next sunday (day off!!) With wire brush attachment and clean the whole underside we won't know its extent.

He's fitted the body panels again as hes trying different cutting compounds to bring up the paint work from sun fade, and try it on metal and the plastic panels to check to see any difference you can see from various pics the sun fade and restore attemps, so far the G3 compound looks to be doing the best that is ofcourse if i manage to get the pics up.

First pic attempt... [img][/img]

Thats better, don't mind barrier just there to deter the kids from trying to get in it or under it

Front bumper to go back on and side skirts to be finished off

Image

Rear re-assembled

Image

The worst bit of rust in rear wheel well, which will be cut out and a plate welded in

Image

The rusty brakes and damaged arch liner that needs replacing if i can get one!!

Image

But the new brake bits to go in

There's a few threads...

I've had some good results just using a rotary polisher and some different grade compounds, if your friend has the gear it might be the easiest way to go.
