Reputable car dealers

Postby CJ » Thu Jul 14, 2005 11:29 am

We've heard a lot recently about dodgy dealers, cross-advertising and other such practices. On the other hard, there are plenty of decent dealers out there, if you purchased your FTO from one or have had dealings with a reputable outlet that sells FTOs, please add their details to this thread.

I hate to say it but I think unless you know someone working in a dealership they're generally all the same - out to screw you for what they can! The only dealers I've seen to be anyway courteous and accomodating at the higher class expensive dealers (e.g. ballsbridge motors) but that's only when they think you've got serious wedge to spend.....

A lot of the the Jap import dealers are bringing in some written-off cars into the country and repairing them. Cars that are written off are grade 'R'. Before buying a Jap import off a dealer always ask for the auction sheet for that car. This has all the detail of the car including grade (1-5). Any thing on the sheet that is marked with an '*' or '!' is not guaranteed. Eg. Mileage.

Rule of Thumb: If the dealer can't supply an auction sheet, then walk away. It's more than likely a Grade R

I say this about DEALER NAME REMOVED from experiences that my friends have had with them and from what I've heard from people that work in the trade.

I think this is far less relevant than it was in 2005, the majority of cars out there for sale aren't fresh imports now.

There is an absolutely MASSIVE amount of FTOs (and other cars) for sale right now. The most I have ever seen. Great cars too, GpvRs, GPXs, Manuals, etc. Nobody is buying though, its a tough time to buy. Just wondering why everyone is selling though? I know some people are emigrating, but not all surely? Are these Dublin Jap lads still selling? 2 second hand jap car dealers in Balbriggan have closed since xmas.

I reckon a lot of people are trying to get out of expensive to run cars (fuel, maintenance, insurance, tax etc) and many people are also downgrading from the more expensive models. Hence what seems to be a massive amount of performance and large engined SUV's on the market - many of which have little chance of selling at almost any reasonable price.

I'd say theres def a market for a specific trade-in website - where you put your own car up for sale and state what you would be willing to accept as a trade up or trade down against and you could perform searches accordingly.

I think your right. I'd say most are downsizing for cost, but a small percentage are probably using this time to upgrade their car for cheaper than normal. I haven't even bothered advertising my car (was considering for reasons of tax/insurance) as I reckon its unrealistic to sell it at any sort of reasonable price given the amount of similar cars for sale. Will probably hold on for another year. (once insurance is affordable). Running costs are not too bad for me right now thankfully.

Dont think name and shame is what the thread is about its about letting people know about reputable dealers i know its all well and good to know the bad also to help avoid them but i wouldn't like anyone from the site getting in trouble for accusing dealers without first hand dealings. Not backing these dealers or trying to get on anyones nerves just giving an opinion. :)

Aido - this thread IS NOT designed for bad mouthing dealers, regardless of your experiences. Accordingly, I've edited your posts.

Note to all - do not post potentially slanderous comments on the forum, stick to pms if you must. The ramifications of a legel case agsinst FTO-Ireland could affect the future of this site...

Sorry CJ. No harm meant. I thought the thread was for comments on good and bad dealers.
Apologies.
