I got one as a present a couple of years ago.
Can't say I think much of it, if I wanted a slideshow I have a monitor attached to the computer.

At best they are a novelty. Get a portable DVD player with a slide show function, and have the best of both worlds.

I got a good one in the US a few years ago and it has served us well. Propped up nicely beside the telly and it gets all of my camera memory cards to show all of our recent snaps. If it wasn't for this, most of my digital photography would never be seen. I have it set on a timer to come on in the evenings and to go off at the end of the day. It's a big hit with family and friends.

My advice on these - get 8-10 inch screen, any smaller than this and the images will be too small to see from any distance. Make sure you get at least 640x480 resolution or more. Finally and importantly, make sure you get one that automatically starts up in slideshow mode when it is powered up, this is ideal for family home when set on a timer. Without this, you have to press a button on the thing to get it working.

Don't have much experience on the cheap eBay brands but would like to see before buying.

Update :

went for a SONY DPF-X800 in the end .
all i can say is that no matter the occasion a digital frame is one of the best presents .
