1998 FTO Tip Won't select anything ! HELP !!!!

Postby dixon2011 » Wed May 04, 2011 10:30 pm

Hi everyone,

I have a 1998 FTO GX Auto and for some reason it has decided to give me a headache.
The car was driving along fine and as it was moved from drive across into tip it just started to free wheel. There was no loud bangs, crashes, grinds or anything else horrid like that it just slowed down like it had gone into neutral or something!
Anyway the car is now sat and no matter what you do it is basically in neutral.
Movement of the shifter changes all the lights on the dashboard but no matter where it is at the car just revs freely and will not engage anything at all!

Does anyone at all have any idea what the problem could possibly be or where to even start trying to figure it out!

Thanks

Could it be a cable snapped somewhere?

Car still rolls even when in Park, not sure on the cables but figured it might be more likely to be electronic failure than mechanical

Sounds like a problem with ur automatic gearshift cable.
Sounds like ur cable has snapped or the end became dissconnected and just happened to leave it in neutral.
This is a mechanical issue as if ur car was genuinely in park you could not move it.
You may have it in park at the gearshift end but if the cable has defected somewhere then this means nothing.

What you can do is remove the airfilter box and housing, then you will see the gear selector unit on the gearbox.
You will also see the cable which attaches to this unit.
While the car is not started up, get somebody to move the gear shift stick from the inside, while you watch the
gear selector unit on the gearbox and see if there is any movement.

let us know how you get on.

Yep, sounds like the cable has broken or become detached.
Have a gander at both ends,
