It seems that it pays dividends to replace your tyres before they get anywhere near the legal limit. I take the point that the graph doesn't factor in speed but its a worthwhile consideration nonetheless.

Interesting graph in terms of tyre thread depth vs stopping distance:

Interesting as well how steep the curve is on asphalt compared to concrete.
