Just want to get opinions on SAT NAV's. I have only ever used Garmin.
So if anyone can make recommendations or suggest which would be the better buy.

ANy that should be avoided.

TomTom seems to be well thought of by owners, Tesco seem to have them on special:

TomTom One Europe, €99 in Tesco Maynooth, don't know if this is in the other stores.

I'm a Garmin fan myself.

I'm using MyGuide, bought it over a year ago full Europe + maps for USA and stuff.
In Ireland i see that Garmin and TomTom are most popular and favourites

I'm on a "ViaMichelin" myself...very easy to use and only mildly annoying...

I'm a Garmin fan as well. Consider a model with European mapping in the event that you might find yourself on the continent. Get a widescreen model if you can afford the extra few quid. I've a Nuvi 255W and I'm pretty happy with it.

Hey, we sell satnavs at work, tomtom have a big name from over in the uk but *rnt particularly great over here.

Garmin are the best in my oppinion.

Is there anything in particular you want in a satnav, is europe an essential or will uk and ireland do?

The garmin 250 and 250w are the entry level satnavs starting at 140quid.

Next is the 310
With a screen the same size as the 250's. This bad boy is about 180 quid and features a bluetooth handsfree kit.

The garmin 600
This monster has the largest screen of the garmin range with all the extras aswell.

All garmins come with a sd card slot a mp3 player and picture viewer as standard.

Ditto. Make sure whatever you buy has the latest version of the maps. I have a Garmin 660, have used it in Ireland, Uk and Italy -very impressive.

Same one as me, they sent me a DVD with updated maps FOC in the post. Very handy.

I have a garmin as well, no complaints. You'll find that you can upload a lot more software with garmin models too.

Garmin here too - works well except that most of the new roads, estates etc. are not in there - anyone know how to get it updated ?

Also, you can't change the voices that easily. It can be done, but it takes a bit of time and patience. I currently have Sean Connery (shaken not stirred), but I'm going to embark on mini project to change it to my daughter's voice.

I updated my Garmin online. Cost €79.99 for a two and a half gig download. Went in with no problems at all, but it is a long upgrade. Make sure your units battery is fully charged before you connect it to your PC.

I think Kace is talking about updating maps with newer versions - this a free download from Garmins site.

By the way, your PC charges the Garmin when it's plugged in anyway so no need to worry about having the battery charged

Its the full map,(2009 NT) but when it installs it asks you what "bit" you want to load. I stuck with the UK & Ireland map. Could have loaded anywhere really.
