I use shell Helix Ultra 5W 40 fully synthetic - good balance - Find it really suits the FTO - there are better oils but they're impossible to find (Motul etc) - every Shell station should have the Helix Ultra in stock - 5l for circa €38 - not cheap but well worth it - it will far outlast the semi-synth stuff.

Not a bad price but I believe this stuff is semi synthetic? Generally regarded as quite a good all rounder oil.
I think the oil choice and longevity is more of an issue with the V6 engines.
I.e. trying to find an oil that will, reduce / eliminate the tappet noise, and keep them quite for as long as possible!

Thats a great price for GTX Magnatec Dave, I've always used Magnatec 10w40 in my FTOs and I can't fault it. If you're looking at getting this in in bulk, put my name down for a few.

My mechanic had been using the 10W 40 stuff - but the last two services I brought along 5l of 5W 40 (A full service will use 4.5litres approx).
It may be all in my head but I just feel the FTO runs better and longer on the 5W 40.

SO if you comes across the fully synth 5W 40 at a better price - I'll take it off your hands.

It would be interesting to see if you could get a price on Silkolene oils, they're very higly rated.

Would love to get Motul or Silkolene - failing that I'm open to suggestions but would have to be 5W 40 - good viscosity for cold starts - v important when your talking about caring for Mivec valves and tappets from cold.

I was advised to use Dextron III. Have had no problems. I think it was about 45-50 euro for the 4.5Ltr drum.

Indeed dextron III is the correct grade for the tiptronic gearbox.
However the above discussion is on engine oil!

silkolene , ive used before but only in motorbikes, i used the PRO grade which was very very very expensive , but id highly recomend it, would be interested to see how expensive it is for a car

Presume the 10W 60 wasn't for an FTO?

I would say €10 per litre is relatively expensive but is what I'd expect to pay for a high quality synthetic oil.

I wouldn't personally use a "60" grade oil - a standard FTO GR would never reach the temp needed to make sense for this grade. Even 10W 50 seems a little extreme in the Irish climate for a highly modded GPX ( and the higher engine temp that goes with it). Thinner oils flow better and have better heat disapation (sic) - a 60 grade will always be too thick and will never reach the optimum operating properties that a 30 or 40 oil grade would reach.

Presume you have a theory though? Does it involve tappets?

Well, dunno about the FTO but all the S2000 club members recommend Red Line Oil... 10W30 to be precise. Great for engine lub when in constant VTEC

Indeed it does sound good. don't believe it is distributed over here. I used redline MT90 in my gearbox. Had to import it from the UK, cost me a fortune mostly in freight charges.

yeah not a problem MfFTO, the oil is actually 26.11 ex vat, well that's the one i got but i'll give yer man a ring and ask!
