Just Installed...

Postby gfalls » Fri Mar 05, 2010 8:58 pm

... a 40GB SSD in my laptop. Should have done it a long time ago, but the prices were sky high. Getting a Windows Experience Index of 7.7 for data transfer. Best I ever got on a pc, with 2 sata drives in Raid 1 was 5.9.

Everythings a lot faster.... I like faster.. :D

Win 7 Ult boots from logo screen to working, in under 20 secs..!

Drive is Intel X25-V (yeah the cheaper version)

I just ordered a machine for myself in work with the following;

i7-930
8GB 1600MHz DDR3
Asus P6T
1x 500GB Sata
4 x 1TB Sata for Raid 5 or 10
DVD Burner
CoolerMaster case
1MW PSU with twin 12V rails
Some other small bits.

Can't wait to build it on Monday or Tuesday when it comes.
Currently in my collection:
'98 Toyota Starlet...
'79 Mini Clubman 1380cc ~100BHP (I hope)
'79 BMW 728

gfalls, whats was the access speed and rotational rate of your old disk? I looked at doing this in the past but decided against it due to the fact that SSDs have higher power consumption rates (bad for laptops) and slower write times in comparison to mechanical drives. The technology needs to move forward before I'll invest in the same, roll on SSD v3...

Old drive was 200gb 4500rpm. The SSD actually uses less power.. :)

Why 8GB of RAM, if you don't mind me asking? The board supports triple channel. So, 4X2GB sticks? Wouldn't you be better off with a 6 or 12GB configuration?

VERY nice board BTW..!

I'd suggest that you would be hard pressed to notice the difference if your original drive was a more recent 7.2k variant. I've been reading tales of high SSD power consumption on the interweb for some time now, has the newer 32nm technology addressed the issue perhaps?

Extra speed is really noticeable. Photoshop CS4 opens around 5 secs, used to take 11 or 12 with the other drive. All apps open much faster. The hype is actually true. I'm pleased with it. Pity its only 40GB, but bigger becomes a lot more expensive.
