Condensation in rear light cluster

Postby Mustang » Fri Jun 18, 2004 11:16 am

Anyone any ideas?
Condensation, keeps forming in the rear (left) light cluster. Took off the light assembly and replaced all the bulbs as the terminals were corroding. The light assembly does not appear to be damaged in any way, the 'foam rubber' seals on the body of the car seem to be in tact and the four transparent nylon washers all seem to be ok. Refitted the assembly, but the condensation came back. Someone suggested a hole in the seal between the back black plastic moulding and the outer plastic moulding (red, amber, etc). So I removed the assembly again and looked for a damaged seal -no joy. Refitted the assembly again and the condensation is back! :?

This seems to be a common problem for the FTO lights - someone in the UK solved this problem for the headlights (or could have been front fogs) by drilling a small hole in the actual plastic casing for the light - here's some links

When i got my fto both rear lights were actually 1/3 filled of water. So basically just took off the light connections with the bulbs on them, drained off the water and then drilled a few holes into the actual plastic casing.

A few months later one of the bulbs stopped working. However all I had to do was take out the buld, clean it and clean the connection and it has been working fine since.

It is a common problem but a quick clean up tends to solve the problem and drill a few holes in the casing to prevent it.
