Postby far123 » Sun Oct 27, 2013 11:37 pm

Hi everyone noticed a weird kind of whinning noise coming when braking specially at low speed like 20 mph and also when accelerating from still till like 30mph then goes away kind of, can anyone please help and give me an idea of what it could be? would be greatly appreciated

Do you mean when actually pressing the brakes or just slowing down?

Could be:

Wheel bearing

Front caliper or maybe pads.

Rise up the car, support it well and spin the wheel by hands, there should be no odd noises at all.

Update Your location please, maybe there someone in Your area that can look at it for U.

Thanks for your reply :)
Just took it for a drive to make sure
Noticed that it doesn't matter if I brake or not the noise is there actually at all time
I just noticed the noise after I changed my front tyres from 205/40/17 to 215/40/17?

Go for another drive and when decelerating push in the clutch and see does it go away.

is it whining, or scraping?

whining could be the tyres rubbing wheel arch liner. How is the suspension? Is it lowered? Do you have nct? Where are you based?

Could be a wheel bearing, would get louder with speed.
Gearbox bearing often whine I'm deceleration, I don't know how you check that in an auto.

Could be tyres like goz said, did it happen straight after tyres were fitted?

Any difference when car is cold or warm?

thanks for your reply well when iam doing 30mph then i put it in N and let it come to a stop while its in N and it still make the noise, so i dont think it could be the gearbox. yeah i think i just noticed it after changing the back tyre to 245/40/17 and the front to 215/40/17. it used to be 215/40/17 at back and 205/40/17 on the front

That's the tyre width! I mean the wheels(rims). anyway I wouldn't think your wheels are that wide that you need 245s on them.

check the wheel arch liners for signs of rubbing. You might have your culprit there. If it's not that, it is possible that it could be just road noise, as different tyres sound different on the road. If it's rubbing, spacers may help, depending on where it's rubbing. The best way to investigate is to take the wheels off the wheels. Let us know how you get on.

Hi goz_83

i dont think its the tyres rubbing, I put the car on jack on the front drivers side and was trying to spin the wheel and was not spinning freely? it was spinning a bit hard and stiff, is that normal because only one side was on jack?

It should spin freely. So you're looking at the brake calliper, or the wheel bearing. Any garage should be able to confirm what's what, for free.

Hi goz_83

Thank you for your reply , i drove for 15 minutes today and mainly motorway then when i got home went out and touched the front disc on both side and they were very hot hot that it burns your finger when you touch the disc, and they are uprated groved and vented disc. should it be that hot to burn your finger if you touch the disc? or is my calliper piston posibily not working well?

The disc will be hot after driving, were your wheels hot?

Hi mivecrx

Would it be soo hot that it burns your finger if you touch it? no i checked the wheels were not hot. But would a bad bearing make the wheel not spin freely?

They shouldn't be scalding hot unless you were doing some heavy breaking, so it's sounding like the calliper now.

yeah thats what i thought goz_83 , because i wasnt doing any hard braking and was driving normal so wouldnt think it should that hot after 15 minutes driving that if i touched the disc it would burn my finger and the back disc were not hot at all just the front disc.
