Pajero Evolution for sale

Postby Myfeckin FTO » Sun Oct 09, 2011 11:06 pm

Just in case anyones interested or knows someone looking for the ultimate winter machine -

http://cars.donedeal.ie/for-sale/cars/2607493

Just spent quite a few bucks getting this back to pristine condition. Manual versions are very hard to come across - in fact I can't find another manual Paj Evo for sale in UK or Ireland.

Its an absolute blast to drive - onroad and offroad - brutal power delivery for a 4x4 and incredible drivetrain spec.

At this rate you should invest in a sheepskin coat...

That's a serious machine though, best of luck with the sale.
Someone's going to have great fun.

Christ, would love to take that yoke for a spin, I'd say it'd be great craic!
Considering the rarity and conditions here, have you thought about advertising in the UK or would it be worth your while?

No prob taking it for a spin Tom - this sits quite a bit higher than a normal Pajero but the all round double wishbones and stiff suspension set-up ensures it doesn't handle like your typical 4WD and the power delivery is fantasic and especially enteraining if switched to RWD only (it also has an LSD).

I have advertised it on pistonheads as well. Two more Paj Evo's also for sale on there but they're more expensive and Tiptronic - http://www.pistonheads.com/sales/list.a ... mit=Search

Fair play for spending 3k on servicing and stuff. Usually not the way to go when selling but in this case it has to be bang on to sell it.
Must be entertaining to drive in 2wd, even my 2.8 was tailhappy with 130hp!

If I'm going to be driving it for any length of time then it has to be right. And you're right - if you're expecting to get decent money for a specialist car then it has to be in excellent nick. And that was 3K carefully spent - very little labour - mostly parts from camskill and milners - and a lot of detective work to solve a couple of problems for instance the bushes were worn in the Aluminium wishbones on the front and rear - cost from Mitsubishi or Camskill was 500Euro per arm X 4 - got a block of Delrin (much tougher than stock nylon or rubber) and had a local engineer turn new bushes - total cost 230Euro.

RWD mode is a laugh alright but the LSD helps out with controlling the action. Independent mulitilink, double wishbones help with getting the power on the road and the wider track helps too. If you want a spin I'd be interested in hearing how it compares to the standard Paj.

I've been in this yoke with the MIVEC on song - its great craic and terribly capable when it comes to pulling donkeys out of swamps. I'd be pulling out the back seats and going commercial. A rare find indeed....

How do people respond to the massive tax?
Would you convert it and try boost interest from the lower tax?

I wouldn't bother - its more difficult to go back to private if the new owner so desires. Anyone buying a machine such as this will likely be savvy to whats required to go commercial. If a prospective buyer asks you to conver before the sale, thats a different story...

Tax is massive but then it was on my 350Zs as well. At least people are used to paying large tax on passenger jeeps as most are over 3 litres anyway (petrol or diesel). I've already had quite a few enquiries from guys driving similar engine sized jeeps (but without the performance).

Pretty sure if someone was actually looking for a commercial they'd be looking for a workhorse like a diesel Pajero rather than high performance. If I changed it to commercial it would be worth less and I'd be cutting off a large segment of prospective buyers. In any case I do actually think this will sell quicker in the UK and it'd need to have rear seats to sell there.

No doubt its not an easy machine to sell (neither were the Zeds) but then its the only manual Pajero Evo I can find for sale between Ireland and the UK (and priced cheaper than the Tips for sale). And if you took the view you wanted something built like a tank, with good go-anywhere performance, that wouldn't date and won't depreciate either then its an excellent buy for the right person.

In the meantime I'm enjoying driving it although as soon as the bad weather hits I reckon it won't be around for long.

According to Mike in Camskill last week those "little ears" cost 3K. Prices for front (aluminium) bonnet and bumpers equally shocking. His advice was "don't crash it".

Off topic a bit Shane, but where did you get your ahnds on the Derlin. I am looking for some large diameter Derlin to repair jetski wear rings.

Delrin blocks bought from Engineering Steels & Materials - based in Eastway Business Park on the Ballysimon road in Limerick. Delrin is easy to turn on a lathe and incredibly hard wearing as you probably already know. Possibly a bit too hard for suspension bushes actually (harder than polyeurethane) which is what I used it for.

SOLD Pajero Evolution

Postby Myfeckin FTO » Fri Dec 09, 2011 2:22 am

Now sold.

Sorry to see it go actually - if road tax and fuel economy wasn't such an issue it'd be definetly the best car for Irish roads I've yet driven.

Could have sold it a few times over in the end. Sold to a German Motor Journalist who intends to build it to a Rally Raid spec for some Euro series or other. This chap actually drove the original Paris-Dakar winning Evo back in the day.

All the serious enquiries came from abroad - mostly eastern Europe in fact. Paj EVO's seem to have built a bit of a cult following back there.

Now I have to find something that'll carry 3 baby seats, can tow a boat, look imposing and have relatively good performance???????

Always liked that bus, while it was a worthwhile weapon in any road warriors arsenal, I can see how it wasn't sustainable to keep in terms of running costs and the relatively short usefulness period. Its interesting that you didn't get much in the way of serious interest locally, tax was the killer I guess.
No doubt the guy will increase the value of the car many times over if the price of this is anything to go by - a good investment if you the inclination, time, skill and money.

Congrats on the sale anyway, I thought you'd struggle big time given peoples frame of mind these days.

That yoke didn't even start off life as an EVO. The Evo versions of Rally Raids are big money -

http://www.rallyevoitures.com/rallye-vo ... 31870.html

The only Pajero Evo road version (similar to mine) for sale on mainland Europe is another 98 Paj Evo at 26,500Euro.
Most of the Eastern Euros that contacted me were very suspect that I was willing to sell a 98 Pajero Evo for 8K while most of the Irish market thought I was mad to be looking for 8K for a 98 4WD.

 - No chance - No way I'm buying another car on finance - I'm very happy just using my meagre pot of cash to purchase these days - plus at the rate I change cars it leaves me much less open to depreciation costs.

This next car has to be more for the missus than myself (I'll get hold of something early in new year) so its not going to be rocketship material and it is going to have to tow a boat so a large 5 Door 2nd hand 4WD looks most likely.

So far its the usual suspects - Discovery 2 (7 seater), X5 (don't really like the BMW image though), Merc ML and several large estates such as the Volvo V70, Merc E class etc or if I really want to "slum" it there always yokes like this - http://cars.donedeal.ie/for-sale/cars/2376231 - would never have considered these but at that money how could you loose?

I only know of one person with actual experience of one of them MG's. Imported it from UK for a steal at about €3k. The next 2 months cost another €3k... :?

Nope that yoke would drive like a truck - light years removed from the double aluminium wishbone/independent set-up of the Paj Evo.

I'd be going down more this kinda road - http://cars.donedeal.ie/for-sale/cars/2660334
or maybe-

http://cars.donedeal.ie/for-sale/cars/2687216

or another one of these (incredible value purely down to road tax issue) -
