Loud noise

Postby threediamonds » Mon Jan 09, 2012 5:44 pm

Hi guys looking for some help with mj's car...... The noise started about a week ago as a slight rumble from the passenger front wheel- stopped a couple of times as I was sure it was a flat(which it wasn't). The noise has gradually gotten louder to a point where it sounds like someone is underneath the car bashing it with a sledgehammer. It's also making a very loud squeaking/screaming noise and the entire car and steering wheel is shaking. It's up on a jack outside my house as I'm not driving it anymore til I know whats up.

Have been driving the fto full time as I was made am offer I couldn't refuse on the Teg before Xmas. Was hoping to drive the fto while I saved a bit if cash to buy something new so need a fix ASAP!!!!!

Anyone hazard a guess to the problem??

Just to add a little bit to this, I thought first it might be the bearing, but Grace said the wheel doesn't move when the car is jacked up. So I don't think thats it, open to correction though.
My second thought was could it be a droplink thats gone? Could it be a cv joint but this seems to be more of a clicking when one of these is gone.
After doing a bit of looking around, I found a few posts on a few forums that seem to have identical symptoms, and they seem to point at a driveshaft? Hoping its not but this seems to be the most likely from reading up on it.
Any thoughts welcome!

If its not a bearing it could be a sticky caliper. Was the wheel hot after driving Grace?
Can't imagine that droplinks would let go that suddenly but if its as severe as you describe I wouldn't be driving it until checked out properly.

CV boot/driveshaft is another good possibility - sounds like you need to get her on a ramp and take a look - it should be immediately apparent to anyone with an ounce of mechanical knowledge.

A sticky brake disc was another thing I thought of. The fact theres a screeching sound coming from it could potentially mean that the stuck pad has worn down to the metal perhaps? Hopefully its only something like that!

Whatever is wrong it'll need a mechanic to sort it.
I'd have no problem leaving it with either John Ward in Kildimo or Frank in Askeaton, they would let you know what's wrong and what you need to order.
I've used both in the past and can't complain.

No it didn't feel overly hot just warm- like normal. Thanks Bernard I might give wards a bell and see will they come in to me- I'm not driving it out. Was a scary drive from work to home- I'm not willing to drive it anywhere at this point.

As soon as I heard the description about the noises I thought it was the bearing as well, but as you said martin the wheel should move, unless it may be possible to sheer a piece of metal badly and it got stuck.
Other than that it's the drive shaft.

This happened me the Thursday before Christmas in the company van. The bearing went and it was getting louder and louder. When the vibrations got worse the drivshaft snapped as it must have been damaged beforehand and I nearly crashed as the brakes failed as well.. All sounds right but I can't explained why all the brakes failed all of a sudden.

Angry ex girlfriend Stewy? :smt003

Sticky caliper would give the screeching noise, but not a banging noise. Sounds like drive shaft is about to snap, as this sounds exactly like what happened to a fiesta I had. It never made it home.

Just out of curiosity is it a tip or a manual?

Unless the fairies come and fix it tonight- il be getting a taxi to work tomorrow- going looking for a cheap run around at the weekend. Not risking it clapping half way down the road or even worse doing damage to myself or someone else. :(

Sounds like a driveshaft issue alright. Have you taken the wheel off and checked for play in droplinks or checked the CV boot?

Shake in the wheel could be due to a number of things.

Amazing that for over 5 years I never had an ounce of trouble with it and I leave it for a few weeks and this happens. Pure bad luck!

What is it with fooking BMWs? World of service cost/parts hassle.

Unless it's a CSL, I don't want to know.

Just do not see the obsession with them.

As a previous owner of a 2001 318iSE saloon, I loved my BMW. Most comfortable ride ever and very classy car. Had mine 3 years and with the exception on coolant loss through corroded lines and a small accident, which bent a wish bone, I never had any trouble with her. It was a tip and was jap import, so had best spec. Miss it like mad I do and the fto doesn't even do it like the 318 did, but not just any 318 out there either. Will try find a snap of it and will post up.

M3s are great and cheap as chips now as no one wants them- I'm not obsessed with bmws i just like this one amd i think its time to grow up-Buying an 08/09 coup in from England in the next year. Driving a petrol guzzling, tax rip off, old jap import doesn't interest me anymore. Im done with that scene. The only other car im interested in is an Evo and I can't justify the expense of one of them- I've a mortgage to pay. BMW it is.
