Honda Civic SiR

IMO the civic (in general) is a good competant car, but is way over rated (especially the 1.3 & 1.4 variants) and to an extent a victim of it's own success attracting as it does the shiney track suit and burberry cap brigade.
Dodgey image aside, the SiR looks like a sweet package -honda reliability, 1.6 vtec with ~170ps.
Any had the pleasure? Any thoughts /experiences?

Mother had a 98 VTI from new - nice machine to go - good handling - fairly staid looks - never gave a ounce of trouble in the 5 years she had it.

The type R's seem to be a bit more extreme and would be a personal preference over the stanard VTI or SiR's - Cannot compete for looks with the FTO though. Would be a good car for the missus - a car you wouldn't mind driving yourself - though it would need to be kept clear of spoilers etc - a nice set of alloys and lowering springs, exhaust and induction and you'd be sorted.

Now we know where you get it from.
I think the Irish car 1.6VTI has 150bhp (or maybe 160bhp) and so is slightly down on power compared to the SiR.
Damn it MfFTO you've driven them all!
Actaully I've never driven one but I think it's a sweet package.

I like your thinking.

Agreed, I think you'd nearly have to keep it as standard as possible not to be tarred with the same brush :!:

Well I did help her choose it - "its a good reliable car mam" :smt002 - "you really don't want that Passat what with its poor fuel economy etc". The only time the car ever hit the VTEC zone was when I was driving.
Irish version has 163BHP.

jap version has 168bhp, so only approx 5 bhp more, but feels a lot faster car, the bro had a irish 94 1.6 vti, before he got his 94 siR, he thought the siR was better performance wise, the 4 door siR comes with recaro interior, not too sure if irish 4 door has this??

The figures I had were 160bhp forEuro /Irish version and 170PS for the Jap version.
So very little in it.

I think you must be on to something there Al. The SiR seems to command much higher prices than it's Irish VTI counterpart, which was a mystery to me :? there must be more to it than ~5bhp

163BHP for 98 VTI (1.6l) - I'm not sure there was an Irish VTI version of the previous model and I doubt it would have had 163BHP if there was. The 98 VTI was seen as a big step up from the previous UK and Irish spec models. I drove a 5 door 1.8 VTI in the UK in 99 for a few weeks (similar to below) - this had circa 170bhp if memory serves me correct but I don't think this model ever appeared in Ireland - in reality it was slower than the 1.6 VTI though.

There was indeed an Irish VTI version of the EG civic 91-95.
Not to be confused with the Jap spec VTI, which is a 1.5.
When I started this post I really had in mind in EK series 95-00.
Al I believe the 170ps was based on the car running on 100 RON.
In any case the specs are listed in the links I posted above.
