You can fit a gearbox from a 1.6 mivec, its an upgrade at that as it's better final drive.

Sorry, don't know much about compatibility, but do you mean from any Mitsubishi 1.6 MIVEC or only an FTO

Sorry for the dumb question there,
1.6 FTO lol wasn't thinking.
Anyway I have come across a 95 FTO 1.8l on a scrapyards website,
can you or anyone tell me if the gearbox in it (presume is a GS model as it's listed as 1.8l) will fit my 98 GPvR,
I can't find any info online regarding the gearboxes themselves
Only info I can find is the different FTO models and that they either have 4 speed auto, 5 speed auto or 5 speed manual
So I presume there are only 3 gearboxes so all manual are identical?
I just need someone to clear this up before I buy the gearbox
thanks in advance

Yes, I believe the GS is using the same gearbox (F5M42) and from what i can make out from Japanese brochure that I have at home the gear ratios are the same as well.

Yeah it should bolt right up, starter might be on opposite side like on 1.6 but that's no problem.
Not sure if driveshafts are same though.

Thanks guys for the replies :)
Just another question, my FTO has LSD as standard,
I understand how cars work and all but is the gearbox and differential all the 1 unit?
Or does the gearbox pass through the diff cuz the GS was the very 1st model?
I believe it's a standard gearbox, would it still do as a replacement for me,
I've also come across Mr. Gearbox in Dublin,
Wondering if they could repair mine for me or is this a bad idea?
Somebody mentioned to me reconditioning is a bad idea, didn't say why
Thanks again for the replies

Lsd is inside your gearbox, you can fit a non lsd box or lsd box.

What is actually wrong with your gearbox ?

The differential from your current gearbox can be swapped over to the replacement unit. Reconditioning of the gearbox would be my preference but this is typically a lot more expensive than straight swap.

if you are near Dublin the following places have great reputation among the petrol heads:

Elmhall Gearboxes in Celbridge ( ask for Ronan )
Bohernabreena Gearbox Centre in Tallaght

As per above, why do you think the gearbox needs replacing?

Re: WANTED: Manual gearbox for 98 GPvR

I bought the car of a guy at the end of December up in Dublin,
Car was grand when I got it,
Only thing I noticed was when the car was cold (just started) it took a little push to get it into 1st
But when the car warmed up no bother, so I passed no remarks on it,
Couple of weeks later I was on an open road so wanted to see what the car could do,
Floored it in 1st but when the rev clock hit around 5-6000 rpm the needle seemed to fly up to the red line but car stopped accelerating, as if something slipped,
Since then I've a noisy gearbox, at 1st I thought or hoped it just broke a CV joint or a wheel bearing went,
But I took it to a Mitsubishi garage and they told me my gearbox is done,
Can still drive it fine, just sounds like a clinking rattling sort of noise turning,
Only in 1st gear and slightly at low revs in 2nd
But I can feel it when I press and release the clutch (in neutral), and I think it's getting louder too
So I'd imagine I probably sheared the teeth off a gear or something
Really don't know if I need to replace it or if it's repairable ?
There's a guy selling a box out of an Asti, wondering does anyone know if it's an LSD box and if it's a straight swap job on the FTO or do I need other parts like drive shaft or anything?

I would check the cv joints are on myself to start. The clunk could be that or maybe the diff is damaged in box.

The accelerating and going nowhere sounds like a slipping clutch.

Does gearbox select all gears OK?, no whines ?

Go get a mechanic to listen to clunk and check cv joints if you can't do it yourself!

Hi mivecrx,
It only seemed to slip that once, it was more like maxing out the revs
I still have full power now and this happened bout 4-5 weeks ago now
I've left it with a Mitsubishi garage and they told me it's the gearbox,
With the car running in neutral, if I push the clutch, no noise, let the pedal out and the noise comes back,
I can also feel the rattle through the pedal kind of,
I might ring the places in Dublin mentioned above see what they think,
If it's not repairable I'll keep looking for a replacement
Thanks for all the info

The rattle in the pedal could be release bearing noise. Pedal in= noise gone. Pedal out = rattle

Look up video on YouTube of release bearing noise and compare.

I was discussing it at work and one of the lads mentioned the release bearing another reckoned it would be noisey for all gear? I've no idea,
I'll look up videos in a while see if it compares any
And thanks again for all the comments

Hi, I watched some videos of release bearing noise on YouTube and I'm pretty sure now that's my problem,
I'm gonna upload a video of my own and share the link to see if anyone agrees,
I had to use headphones as it's hard to make out with the exhaust
If it is the release bearing would a new one do or am I looking at a new clutch kit also?
I'm asking cuz the rattling I get is more than likely damaging the pressure plate? I'm not great at knowing this kind of stuff,
I'll post the YouTube link in a while if that's permitted on this Forum?

Unless the clutch has been replaced "recently" it would be a false economy to do just the bearing in my opinion. I bought last week Exedy clutch kit for about €160 delivered (from UK in Easter Sale), should be collecting it this evening or tomorrow from Parcel Motel. Will report back when it's been fitted.

When your clutch is removed that's when you can get your answer, I would recommend replacing it with a clutch to suit your driving, oem or fast road use.

Link to video when done please

Thanks again for the comments
Listened to the video again and not sure what I make of it
Hopefully someone a lot more mechanical minded can watch (just 1:34 long)
I was rolling back and forward before driving off and stopping the recording
I'll get another tomorrow of just sitting in neutral slowly pressing and releasing the clutch
Any way for now, here's the link: https://youtu.be/9n40ZyixhDw
I think I'll go ahead and order an Excedy clutch kit from eBay in the morning
And by the time it arrives I might have figured out if I need a gearbox too?

Hard to hear in video. I would take brccrx up on his offer if you near him, he should have no problem finding problem.
