Happy Days :D

Postby Baldrick » Fri Dec 11, 2009 5:29 pm

Had my NCT earlier this afternoon and, to my amazement, passed :D

Had done some pre-test stuff: Steering rack boot, front and rear bushes, rear brake caliper (Thanks Seb), and some surface rust removed and painted on brake lines.

Had the emissions tested also. Failed on High idle:

Lambda: 1.016 (between 0.97 and 1.03 - Pass) - Pass
CO: 0.62 (above 0.3 - Fail) - Fail
HC: 80 (above 200 - Fail) - Pass

Added 1 Litre of Dipetane to a quarter tank of petrol. Did this for two consecutive quarter tank fills, and gave it some 'spirited' driving to the test center. Got there 10 minutes before test and let it sit (Paul Nolan's advice to CJ, I think).

High Idle test results:

Lambda: 1.000 (between 0.97 and 1.03 - Pass) - Pass
CO: 0.28 (above 0.3 - Fail) - Pass
HC: 49 (above 200 - Fail) - Pass

It sailed through on everything else also. Seriously chuffed. Not bad for a 15 year old motor :D

The opposite is true in fact, letting the car sit @ idle will increase your chances of failure, drive the stones out of it and switch off, idling cools down the cat. Anyway, you passed - congrats!

My mistake for not being clear. I meant I let it sit with the engine off. Still can't believe the reduction from the pre-test.

Cheers guys. Fully expected it to fail. Couldn't believe it when it passed.

Looks like they were the results before he added the diptane etc.

I had a very similair set of results and done the same thing with diptane and
spirited driving on the way over, car passed ok.
