Insurance companies & mods

It's an age old question but I'm curious as to how people on here find their insurance company are with mods? Do people find their policies increase stupidly or reasonably when mods are declared?

Depends on the company and mods, mine went up a few quid with anything that may increase power...

The only thing I'm considering is a remap for a little extra fun factor...

What's a few quid? Take a remap for example - personally I'd be happy enough to pay 50 or maybe even a 150 euro extra but I wouldn't be bothered if you're talking 500 euro.

Declaring my Exhaust system/Induction kit/Suspension was around €150 extra all in.

I'm going to have to declare a lip/skirts/bumper once I get them on but I doubt (hope!) it'll effect it.

I can't see them charging a hell of a lot tbh, do let us know how you get on though.

I'm assuming you're considering the remapping day on BMW-Driver soc?

Seems like you could save a nice amount which would help cover the insurance hike.

I'd definitely go for it as long as the jump in premium isn't outrageous.

Make sure you declare the remap. If you have an accident :D the assessors can usually tell

Didn't even realise there was a mapping day on until you mentioned it tbh -

How can they tell a car has a remapped OE ECU exactly?

Especially if the whole thing has been wrapped around a pole?

I would only be declaring an aftermarket exhaust if I had fitted some sort of crazy drainpipe trash can to my car. A twin-tip oval Mongoose looks so close to standard that there's no way I would even be drawing attention to it. It's standard as far as I'm concerned.

Also, I would think that no assessors would even know what a completely standard FTO exhaust even looks like.

What qualifies as a mod?
Surely there must be guidelines as I can't see you having to declare every spurious part on a car.

I'd imagine 90% of cars 5 years and older have non spurious parts fitted, only main dealers would use original parts...

apparently according to the quinn website u have to declare stickers on your car!!

2yrs ago when i added brakes and suspension to my policy it went up E48, now they want over 100 plus another 150 for the exhaust..... ive paid my policy for the year with out mods and im just gonna add them to the policy one i get the paperwork cause it works out cheaper that way for some reason!! its a joke having to declare things like brakes etc, the way i see it if the car passes the NCT it shouldnt matter what is done thats not standard.... the way i see it there are cars out there with brakes that are far superior to upgraded FTO brakes but they dont have an increase in their policy premium.

Yup, I remember coming across that too before. I remember stickers being one of the options on the drop-down list in the quote section. At the end of the day, if they want to void your insurance they will find something.
