Wireless networking..Driving me NUTS

Postby Muad_dib77 » Tue May 02, 2006 10:58 pm

Hiya..

Trying to share my broadband connection with my gfs laptop.

Normally I'd use a router but as I lack one of those I tried using the "ms shared internet connection wizard"...Cannot get it to work..

I have my pc on the LAN (Broadband Internet connection), that bit is fine
I have the two machines set up in a wireless network - main pc is base-station, laptop connects to it just fine.
I have enabled connection sharing and selected the appropriate web adapter on my main PC (wireless 2)

still no joy...am I missing something here??

Is the gf's laptop set to assign the ip address automatically?

Hiya.. IPs are automatically assigned (on the wireless)

GFs laptop connects fine to the network - but not to the internet..
unable to ping anything from it..

Can you confirm that the laptop is getting an IP address via DHCP? (ipconfig /all from a command prompt, IP should be in the 192.168.0.x range)

Is the Windows firewall enabkled on the PC? if so, try disabling it.

Take a look at this http://support.microsoft.com/default.as ... %5D;310563

ICS isn't great to be honest...

Yups IPs are being assigned by DHCP.

Tried both with and without firewall..

Apparently in my desperation to get it working last night I forgot to revert the settings before handing the laptop back...as a result my poor gf was unable to log on in work... Ugh...

(TBH I don't recall changing her LAN settings - but I must have whoopsie doodle)

Maud, you'd be just as well to go and buy a cheap wireless access point and plug it into the router. If the AP runs DHCP, disable it and use the DHCP server on the router. Maplins sell one for 80 quid, you could probably pick one up cheaper though. Assuning that you're not using any encryption between your two wireless cllients, it would be easy to hijack the connection from outside the house (if you could be bothered that is!)

Ehm..

Lap top has a built in wireless netcard..and I'm using a USB wireless dongle type thing in the back of the desktop. The USB dongle can be set to two things Base Station & Access point.. I'm guessing I need it set as access point since I need the lap top to connect to it and not vice-versa..

It's not really a priority at this stage..have the GF converted to using the desktop at this stage... I'd just love to be able to check my mails from the couch and stuff...
