IP Range /24

Postby RussMan » Tue Mar 06, 2007 5:00 pm

Hi there,

Curious if anyone has every encountered this (Doubt it) but worth a go.
We own a large range of external IP addresses. Namely a /24 subnet.

I'm wondering whether we can sell this and how much its likely to sell this. Note that you cannot simply buy IP ranges anymore they are allocated to ISP's by the likes of RIPE and ARIN but never sold. We did however buy this block before rules were put in place to stop companies buying large IP spaces in the IPv4 space.

Anyhoo just chancing my arm to see if anyone knows what i'm taking about!

Thanks
Russ

In theory, public IP addresses have no intrinsic value, RIPE dictates that IP addresses are not owned but assigned i.e. its not possible to buy and sell IP subnets. If you were a registered member of the RIPE NCC, you can in theory reassign part of that /24 subnet and charge a fee for the privilege (although you would need to bundle some service with it).

Anyway, to answer your question - no, a company or individual can't sell on IP address assignments.
