Inner CV boot? * solved, steering rack boot *

Postby Muad_dib77 » Mon Nov 23, 2009 3:46 pm

Lads... I'm fairly sure this is my Inner CV boot... I just want to be sure to be sure...

ImageImage

From above is located nearly directly below the battery bracket.. I needed to replace my battery yesterday and had it out to modify it.. (read, adjust the sides with a variable force applicator device)

2nd pic shows the split...I put some grease on there for good measure but I really want to replace the boot asap so as not to be replacing more expensive bits..

Aaah yes. that could well be actually..that would fit location wise I guess..as it's not near the gearbox as such... I should really have had a look under the car but It was gailforce winds and p1ssing rain...

Anybody here who can 2nd that? Pretty please.

Out of curiosity, how much was postage and packaging on these? I've just received a set from Camskills: £11.95 + P&P £13.95  (As it happened, I also got a set of anti roll bar bushes at the same time which didn't cost any more P&P, so not so bad).

By default, Camskill will send all items by courier. If you want to save a few quid and you're not in a hurry, ask them to send the goods by post. They will usually oblige unless the items are big and bulky.

Apparently there are boots you can get that you don't have to remove the joint. they come split and you glue them together.

Yea, I've heard about them too. I've never used them nor seen them. I heard there not as durable as proper ones and don't last as long. So I heard.

that explains the slightly sore feeling I got when I paid... damn!

Apparently they're fairly pig-ish to fit as well..not looking forward to it one bit! Anybody around Louth, Meath, Dublin with experience in the area?

Are they that hard? From memory I think you can drop the steering rack handy enough once you take the track rod ends off and disconnect the steering?

I'm sure Rory can shed some light on it.

The steering rack doesn't have CV boots. If it's the inner CV joint boot then it's a messy job. Have plenty of rags spare to clean the grease off everything. You'll need to take the hub off and the drive shaft, disassemble the shalf into it's two parts, then slide the boot onto the CV. Unless you can remove the CV from the shaft but I've not come across a way to do that yet.

Page 17on of the Workshop 2 PDF has it detailed but it's not very clear tbh. It refers to the CV as the B.J. (Birfield Joint). The one at the diff side is called a T.J. or Tripod joint. Which boot needs replacing to be exact?

We've already established that it was a steering rack gaiter and the part has been ordered Jonathan :r

You need to remove the track rod end. Mark with tipex before hand and you should gwet away with having to track the car afterwards. You dont need to drop the rack. BIt awkward gerring the cable tie/clip on the inside. You need to get right under the end of the rack to do it. More patience wearing than difficult really.

Mine split, did them in the summer, be handy to have a ball joint spliter for tie-rod ends, i replaced the steering rod end while i was at it
i'd suggest the same, mine were loose enuf and i was already putting on a new gator i was half way there:D steering is tighter now.

Ball-joint splitter or something to hammer it off, tricky job if it's your first time but hy i managed to replace the gator and rack end.

Ooo and if your taking of the tie rod end make sure you count the threads and put it back on the same distance, you'll need to get wheels aligned after imo.

If you have to buy one, don't get the fork type, waste of money imo. The scissors or puller type are the way to go. Only cost a few quid and they'll be useful to you for a long time.
