Brake Disc Replace Guide

Postby goz_83 » Sat Feb 11, 2012 10:12 pm

Here is a guide to replace your brake discs. Requires only person, but two is better for moral support.

Tools needed:

Car Jack
Support Stands
Wheel Bolt Wrench
Spanner size 14, or 14 socket if preferred, but spanner is needed for the upper bolts due to tight access.

STEP 1
Loosen the wheel bolts before raising the car.

STEP 2
Raise the corner you are working on and place support stand under the corner.
Lower corner to the stand, but leave jack in place for extra support.
Remove wheel bolts and wheel. The wheel makes a very handy seat too :)

STEP 3
Using your spanner/socket to remove the bolts, which hold the caliper seat to the rotor assembly. I found it very helpful to tap with a hammer and it did not take much force.
The two bolts can't be seen in this photo, but are in the area of the red arrows and are easy to find.
My brother thought he would pose for the pic below.

STEP 4
Use a C Clamp to compress the pads back, which allows easier removal and refitting of caliper.
Remove the caliper and secure if it hangs loose. There was not enough slack in mine for it to hang.
PS- you can remove the pad seat by removing the size 12 bolt near the bottom rotor bolt, shown in the third photo. The top piece then pulls out, but avoid this if you can manage. It gets fiddly otherwise.

STEP 5
Remove the old disc. This will likely require a few hard whacks of a regular hammer to the beveled center (the part protruding out). Do not strike at the face of the disc, strike the beveled section on the side, never hitting the the part of the disc where the pads rub. A few good whacks all around will make it easy to pull the disc off.

STEP 6
Clean the new disc and slip it over the bolts. I recommend putting on two of the wheel bolts to keep it steady.
NOTE: The disc installed is directional. Make sure if using grooved discs, the groove is on the right way; grooves from top to bottom Outer disc to Inner disc) facing toward front of car.

STEP 7
Put the caliper back on and bolt it back into place. Make sure the disc spins. Take the wheel bolts off if you put them on the disc.

STEP 8
Put the wheel back on. Fit the bolts, remove the support stand and jack the car to the ground. Tighten the wheel bolts.

JOB DONE.
