Some FTO \ RX-8 pics

The bucket and sponge came out today - so did the sun and so did the camera! The shots below provide an interesting comparision between the FTO and the RX-8. After viewing the pics, the following notions came to mind:

1. The FTO was designed in 1994. The RX-8 was designed in 2003, 9 years later. The FTO has absolutely no problem holding its own in terms of styling when sat beside the RX-8.

2. The FTO looks much sleeker at the front, the RX-8 wins out at the back end.

3. Mitsubishi really should have considered using twin exhausts on the FTO.

4. Consider the front view of both cars, the FTO looks a little bit disgruntled while the RX-8 is happy out!

Lovely pair you have CJ :wink:

Both go well together I think, strong shoulder lines.
Love the seats in the Rex.


Just a thought, would you consider a smaller front plate on the Rex, like the one you had on the VR4?

My ideal 2 car fleet :!: Looking well. I spent the day washing the cars too (my results would not be as good though :|) I've been hankering after a Rex for while now. But I really don't want to part with the FTO... Damn time, money, insurance constraints!
While it would not take much convincing to get the GF to buy one a change is not on the cards yet....

Have considered it, the previous owner ran without a front plate for nine months (how he managed it I don't know), the front plate certainly screws with the cars lines.

I'll hang on until the insurance company send out the disc (I'm waiting 2 weeks, damn you RSA!), the VLC only arrived yesterday and the tax is a month out. The guards would love the combo of a non-regulation plate, no insurance disc and tax a month out of date...

Get your convincing hat on ;) Like all cars, RX-8 values have dropped quite a bit in the last few months, they really are a reasonably affordable, practical performance car. Just like the FTO, they're a hugely rewarding drive, I do believe I'm smitten :smt055

rx8strakes.com had them on my doorstep in jig-time, they definetely improve the side profile.

On the subject of the plate, I'm a little confused. the RX8 was released onto the Irish /Uk market in Late '03 for January 04 sales. As yours is a UK model, it was probably imported to Ireland some years later. How did the owner manage to get such a low reg number? I thought the fist 200 were effectively reserved in advance and would have been long gone by the time this car was imported :!: :smt017

am i blind???? i cant see that!!! i know the badge of Lee's RX7 is the rotary one but I cant see one on the 8? i can see the rotary shape alright but i done see any etching!!

Me and lee could do a "slightly older fto and RX7 shoot" :D granted it would not look as tasty as those pics but it would be nice!!

I forgot how well the old FD looked when polished up, I miss that car!

Obviously the 8 doesn't have the pace of the 7 and is a lot less torquey in the low and mid range. Both cars have excellent handling traits, the 8 is more forgiving when it lets go (DSC helps). The interior of the 8 is a big improvement over the 7, it really adds to the driving experience. The 8 is surprisingly practical, you can easily fit 4 adults comfortably, 2 adults and a Jack Russell is a tight fit in the FD! I brought 2 lengths of white deal back from the hardware today thanks to the boot access point in the rear!

If you want out-and-out power, the FD is the car to go for. FDs make fantasic track cars and are hugely rewardsing to drive. Beacuse of the lack of TCL\DSC, they can catch novice drivers out, its a very tail happy car.

If you're after a practical and reasonably quick RWD sports car with good looks thats a bit less expensive to run than the 7, the 8 is the way to go.

Easy enough. numbers 1-200 are reserved for special reg's. you can get a special reg on used imports as well as new ones.

As long as the number you want hasn't been taken. (can't see 80 being that sought after)
You'd have very little chance of getting a number over 200 as a special reg, you have to wait for the number to naturally come round.

They only go back 10 years for these though. and they're now 1000 euro.

I wanted to get 16 for the Saab (as it was a 900 T16) but they wouldn't do it cos it was too old. they told me at the time that 10 years was the cut off point.

Don't discount the Irish market just yet Lee, theres some great baraings to be had around the place (+ the fact that VRT on the 8 ain't the cheapest).

I screwed a slightly smaller piece of perspex into the grille and stuck the plate to it with double-sided foam (supplied with plate).
