Wanted - FTO GPX Alternator

Postby Kace » Fri Apr 20, 2012 1:28 pm

I have had a new alternator fail after only 7 months. I am chasing the seller (eBay) to see whether he will repair / replace as he has a 12 month warranty on these.

However, I'm not sure whether I will get any joy from this guy so may need another alternator. Has anyone got one lying around from a broken / donor car ?

This is the one I bought - the first one lasted 18 months, the second one only 7 months. Doesn't spank of quality given the original Mitsubishi one lasted about 14 years

Thanks,
K

How many pins in your alternator as there are 2 types IV 1 or 2 at home that you can have for small money

Thanks Dan. Mine is a 4-pin alternator. Let me know what you have there.

Just checked my local mechanic's invoice to see how much he charged me for an alternator fit compared to P. Nolan.

Put it this way, I will be travelling the extra few miles back to Paul from now on !!! Better work that I can trust and a decent whack cheaper too.

Paul is actually very close to where I live(15 min drive). Will be looking to use him in the future as many here have said how great his work is, will be buying front and rear break discs and pads and would be looking for someone to fit them.

You could follow my guide, but it's a bit of hassle to do really. The discs are easy to change, but removing the calipers can be very tight without removing the brake line.

Perfect time to fit braided lines and upgrade the fluid at very little extra labour.
If you were to consider doing this chris it will be worth your while.
Will be doing this myself soon

Came back after holidays there a couple of weeks ago to find the FTO battery completely flat - not even my alarm LEDs were functioning. I thought it was strange but put it down to the freezing weather and having the car laid up for a couple of months.

Jumped it a couple of times and drove around but then found that the battery hadn't charged above about 5v, even though the voltmeter read about 14v when the car was running. Strange given I replaced the battery with a new Bosch last April and also fitted an OEM alternator (admittedly secondhand). I took the battery back to Atlas and dropped it in to be charged and tested, however given it is nearly brand new I thought I had yet another alternator go on me.

Amazingly Atlas phoned my today and confirmed that the Bosch battery was indeed faulty and would be replaced under warranty. Happy days !!

At present I'm planning to NCT the car in March, get Classic insurance with Campion, tax it for 6 months and do some driving on fine days, leaving the luxury cruiser at home !!! That's the plan anyway - let's see how the NCT goes this time around. Must be about my 6th or 7th NCT at this stage - lost count !!

It's good news that you're keeping it, talk about a car owing you nothing.
Good luck with the NCT, must book mine too.
