White smoke

A plume of white smoke came out of my exhaust the other morning on starting the car initially? What causes this? Hasn't happened since.

What causes this? Hasn't happened since.

One of the following:

1. Condensation in the combustion chamber (caused by moisure in the fuel)
2. Leaking \ badly seated valve seals
3. Coolant entering the combustion chamber i.e blown head gasket

If this is a once off, don't worry about it, it it hapens regularly then do worry about it!

I don't think its a co-incidence that you way overfilled your oil and that you're getting a big plume of smoke from your exhaust.

When you say you topped up your oil and didn't see the max mark - how far up the dipstick exactly is the oil showing at the moment?

there are actually notches on the dip stick. Now i feel like one lol. The oil level is higher than max now. Dont know if i should drain it a bit now. There is still a bit of white smoke initially in the morning on start up. could be all the rain lately. But i'm not sure.

I'd say drain it, even just crack open the sump drain nut and let it drain down around it, and then tighten it back up again.

You did check it when the engine was cold, right? If not the oil level will appear higher than it actually is. The mention of the white smoke though could indicate that there is more oil in there than there should be.

Drain it asap - don't mean to be an alarmist but you can damage your engine if you run it with too much oil....

Got a guy to do it in Fast fit exhausts in Coolmine Ind Estate. He charged nothing so i just gave him a few bob. We live and learn.
