Service sticky in FTO knowledgebase?

Do you think one of you could maybe make a sticky about the whole servicing procedure? I was going to ask recently as I haven't a clue where to start with brands mainly, or the other small things you may forget about.

Like, how about a basics list and then optional list to get done and also the best brands and where the item can be got from? You could even have the lowest cost half decent one V the best if you want to fork out a bit.

Like take for instance, gear oil? I haven't the foggiest notion where to get this, what to look for, how many litres I need for a full change etc. Or irridium spark plugs, is it a big no no to get them from ebay?

I for one would find this helpful. It's hard to get the answer to everything using the search feature. If you use 'service' or 'servicing' in the thread topic it should pop straight away.

Thanks!

A defacto 'service' post isn't a bad idea, all of the required info is on the forum (and workshop manuals in the downloads section), its just a matter of being specific with the serach criteria.

Leave it with me and I'll get something started.

Woohoo! Thanks CJ.

I haven't gotten round to reading the manual yet  but it's not going to say stuff like '(insert brand name) Irridium spark plugs available from Camskill' etc... This I'd find very helpful.

Think this is a good idea alright. All the info is here, but sometimes hard to find it.
A suggestion I have might be that it would include recommendations on mileage intervals for other general maintainence items too, belts, gearbox oil etc?

Can someone please volunteer to start this off soon, because my car is actually dying I think. It's definitely not well anyway.

As soon as you tell me what to get, I'm buying it.

It depends on it's history.
Has the timing belt been changed, did you do much since you bought it?

History unknown. Serviced apparently. TB done at 88k apparently, but painting it on the car means nothing to me, as does a sellers 'word'.

In a word, nothing has been done since I bought it, hence the slight death vibe at the moment...

A good start would be:

Denso iridiums (Camskill)
New air filter (Camskill/motor factors)
Oil and filter (anywhere)
Coolant change (anywhere)
Transmission fluid change
check over suspension/steering/brakes.

Oh, and as you're doing all the plugs, get an inlet manifold gasket.
Might be worth having a look to see what shape the rocker cover gasket is in too before you order parts. If they do need replacing, its as easy to do it all together.
