So what's the general View on the Supra?

is it not really to do with the fact that there are fewer FTO's, therefor less parts available and of those parts available they are generally more expensive, therefore the risk to an insurance company goes up cos it'll cost em more to replace sh1t!

I'm amazed by those quotes - much lower than I thought they'd be..

I can't think of any good explanation other than maybe the insurance companies haven't realised what sort of car the supra is & they obviosly think that FTOs are driven by maniacs..

Yeah, it seems the Hulkster goes along to the Supra meets as well. His youngfla is 14 and manages to drive a Supra round the place, how does he get away with that I wonder? Anyway, its good to see that Hulkamania is still alive and kicking!

I think you'd be mad.
The Supra is not really a suitable replacement for an FTO -think of the road tax and the running costs! And theres no point in getting one unless its a TT model. Its not better looking than an FTO and doesn't handle any better either - your money would be better spent getting the turbo sorted and the new front spoiler on. Or an EVO engine conversion.

I expect that you would also need to get the TT engine remapped to run on 95 RON. As I believe the stock unit does not the like stuff!

these are all the things that are keeping me with the FTO, but i've recently driven a scooby STI and the realisation that i will never have that sort of power is a bit annoying, plus there is only so much power i can put through the front wheels.
The turbo is on it's way, waiting on the pipe work to be welded still, it came back wrong first time round, once again delayed!
it'd be nice to just drive a car that as standard is a beast to begin with.

I agree, that's what attracted me to the FTO in the first place and it's also what got me in the golf - ok it's no beast out of the box but a small amount of cash and some subtle changes and its goes pretty well.

That said a TT supra sounds pretty cool - only thing I'm not sure about is the looks - I reckon they're starting to look a bit dated as the bonnet is too long. The FTO is way better looking IMHO.

I'm still lusting after a 225bhp TT with a remap ;)

I wonder would it be possible to convert an FTO to 4wheel drive without having to rob a bank.. I think it was Jeremy Clarkson who said something about sticking more than 220bhp through a fwd ..something with it being insane and uncontrolable..

The FWD is the ONLY thing I don't care much for in the FTO - having said that I'm sure I'd have spun a few times already if it'd been RWD.. I have heavy shoes and a tendency to wrestle the steering wheel around corners. (have gotten more careful after I experienced the FTOs amazing tendency to oversteer wildly even if it is FWD)...

As far as FWD cars go the FTO is one the best and while RWD is the "drivers" choice I'd prefer predictable & safe oversteer rather than bank busting oversteer ;) Although you're right about the FTO having a tendancy for oversteer at times - but only when you really cook it.

IMO 4WD is a good compromise cause you get masses of traction so you can fling yourself out of corners but you also get tendancy to understeer if things get too crazy.... safe and predictable ;)

In a word, no, you're talking big bucks.

Muad_dib77 wrote:I think it was Jeremy Clarkson who said something about sticking more than 220bhp through a fwd ..something with it being insane and uncontrolable

If you turbo charge the FTO, you could use a boost controller and set it at a level in each gear just below the point where full power causes wheel spin, this should enable you to get maximum thrust without too much instability up front. You'd probably need to use an aftermarket ECU such as as Mines VX ROM in conjuction with a boost controller. Theres a 500bhp CTR featured in last months Jap Performance magazine and it appears to pretty stable, that said, you'd talking a bucket load of cash to do the job right. In terms of production cars, the Alfa 147 GTA knocks out 250bhp and its FWD, I believe it suffers badly from torque steer (just like the FTO at times).
