What he's saying it true.
Basically the block needs to be stripped completely to get at them and is a very tedious job to replace them.

For a GPX you can adjust the tappets but for the GR they need to be replaced completely.

There are a few people that tried it themselfs and I don't know what the results were but I'm sure everyone on here will say leave it to a professional as you need specialist tools for it.

Ring around and get a few quotes at it is an expensive job and prices will vary a lot.

Does that include the labour and parts?
If so yeah thats a good price. I have a GR a while back and my tappets were getting a little noisy. Was getting quotes from€700 to €1400

This might seems like a stupid question but do they actually need replacing. How long is the tappets noise till it start to quieten down, or is it constant?

If money is tight it's get a thicker oil and an additive called lifter free. That will expand the seal around the tappet and keep the pressure resulting in reduced noise, but that's only a short term fix.

If you're hanging onto the car, make sure that OE tappets are used. Great price you got quoted. It's a big job!

I had noisy tappets over 18 months now,it was just the first few minutes stewy but now its half an hour before they quiet down. I dont drive the fto far and not every day so i need to take her out on a few hours run to see if its still noisy after that time.......I bought the tappets from camskill . Am i doing the engine real damage by not changing the tappets,or will putting thicker oil help till i get funds to fix fto.

AFAIK, you're not doing damage, but the noise will get louder and there will be no enjoyment in driving a car that sounds like a bag of spanners.

:whs . It will do no damage, but as you said it takes about half and hour for the tappets to get quiet. I'd replace them especially as you got the quote for 300 squid.

How mic did you pay for the tappets by the way.... And how many of them?

thanks esuc_calin..............i doubt i could do that myself, but ive noticed in very warm weather the noise of the tappets is near silent,so my question would be as you live in a very warm climate is the heat helping in anyway?

I did this job a couple of years ago on a GR that didn't get that much mileage after the job was done, costly excercise and for what!! taking out a bit of a rattle on start up, that re-ocurred later anyway. Unless it is completely unbearable, can you live with it? and save your money for a GPX.......

This post brings my post count to 1000, so the advice is therefore absolutely more important than any other advice you receive on the forum...ever.

You've ordered the tappets and if you love your GR...get the tappets replaced.

Or, return the tappets and go buy a GPX, as this is akin to dumping your girlfriend, who you've grown familiar with and then doing her better looking sister.

If you're bold enough...keep both

It won't completely eradicate the tappets noise but there is a good step up in noise reduction.

If only things were that simple lol

warm weather helps indeed , winters don't go below -5
but as i remember , cold mornings always get the worst in tapps.
keeping the 7000Km synthetic oil maintenance schedule keeps the bag of nuts quiet.
in winter i always get a little emotion when turning the key , but they stay silent as a cat's purr. even after a week of not use.
and about the difficulty , is not so high, all u need is the "how to" of the removing of the manifold(here or aussie forum), then is walk in the park :) if you cover properly the air admission holes ... cos u don't wanna drop a hair in there.

Edit:
link here for the show before the tap cleaning
http://ftoaustralia.com/v3/viewtopic.php?f=23&t=7258
at end don't forget to refill them with oil :) or it will take 10 mins to quiet them ... will sound like a bag of nuts worst than ever ... happened 2 me :)
