The width of the rim and the offset (how far in/out the wheel is in against the hub) will be the big factors.
I have 17s on mine with 235/40 on them and dont' think I'd like to go any thinner than that tbh, ride quality is compromised with the lower profile tyres, but I'm more worried about the extra bumps and bangs the car gets which can't be good for it over a long period of time.
That and your rims wouldn't be getting much protection, gotta be much easier to buckle the 18s on 35s I reckon.
