Starion

Postby Wildhound » Wed May 07, 2008 10:05 pm

A friend and I are thinking of importing a Starion from the UK just for a bit of fun. Probably won't do it before the new VRT comes in (current rate for it is only about 300 quid!) so I'm wondering how I'd go about working out what it'll cost on under the new system?

Good call! Kinda looks like the De Lorian from Back to the Future haha!

How much you looking to spend on it?

You can pick up pretty decent examples for 2-3k. The VRT is the clincher though. Just hoping it doesn't sky rocket!

Current VRT rate 30%. Highest rate (which will apply to the Starion) after July 36%. Total increase 6% on a 2 to 3k car, hardly worth talking about.

Excellent stuff thanks. That settles it so, I'll have to pick one up during the summer.

get quotes on classic insurance. an older one may make sense then. (pre 88 ) insurance should be around €300-€400

Just keep in mind thst you can pick up decent examples of the FTO for similar money as well and I would regard the FTO as a much better sports car.

A lot of these older sports cars can prove to be a big disappointment to drive - things have moved on since the Starion roamed the earth.

Of course but I already have an FTO! I like the idea of messing around in an 80s turbo sports car for a while (probably because I grew up watching 80s TV shows that were crammed full of them).

I'm not even remotely expecting it to outdo the FTO but it'll certainly be a different experience and there's nothing like a bit of old school cool - you never see them on the roads here.

We'll probably hang on to it for a couple of months (maybe eve bring it to a meet ;)) and then sell it on when we get bored. Could even make a small profit. We'll see I suppose.

Interestingly the 4G63 engine it sports is the same block used in the Lancer right up to the Evo IX. That's some pretty impressive evolution.
