Golf TDI

Postby CJ » Thu Dec 21, 2006 9:20 am

I got beaten off the line by a Golf TDI this morning, granted I wasn't actually trying, I was in 3rd gear all the way (tip) and the engine hadn't warmed up yet i.e. 5.5k rpm limitation (excuses, excuses I hear you shout!). As it passed me in the bus lane I was expecting to see a GTI or 4Motion badge afixed to the rear, I was surprised when 'TDI' stared back at me. They're torquey little yokes low to mid range, this one was a bit tricked out which leads me to think it could have a Superchip lurking around the ECU - nice gains to be had on a turbo-ed oil-burner.

CJ did you see if it was a "RED-EYE" (Red I) TDI or the "Plain" one?

Apparently the Red-I ones are pretty mental for what they are..

Diesel power is pretty impressive these days - for real world driving it's hard to beat - lots of midrange so overtaking is easy. There's a lad on vag-drivers.net who has his mk4 golf tdi VAN putting out around 250bhp.... with 350+ ft/lbs torque - I'd say that's pretty fast..

One of the interesting stats I saw recently relating to a diesel was for the BMW 530D. It accelerates 0-60 in 8.1 secs I think.

What's strange about that ? Well the equivalent 530i Petrol only does it in 0.1 sec quicker !!

Diesels are definitely improving big time..
