[MINI MEET] Port Tunnel [Feb 2007]

Postby Kace » Wed Dec 20, 2006 10:08 pm

Port tunnel finally opened today as you all will have seen.

Sounds like a great opportunity for a mini meet in a few weekends time, where we will all have the opportunity to hear a convoy of sweet sounding 24v's and Mivecs, all for the princely sum of 6 yo-yos.

Should also be an oppportunity for a post-Crimbo pint and maybe even a moonlight tyre-kick or two.

Thoughts ?

Now, that's a wicked idea - if I still had an FTO I'd pay the 6 euro on a regular basis late at night just to hear the V6 sing ;)

Sounds like a good idea. But I believe that cars are not allowed through the tunnel until January, only trucks for the time being.

I'd be still up for a mini-meet though.

Hey Aiden - I think this is meant to happen in the beginning of January anyways.. I sure hope that's what's meant in the 1st post - otherwise I wont be able to make it :-s

First thing we need is the date on which cars will be alllowed to go through the tunnel - this has not been anounced yet but is expected to be mid-late Jan.

You are talking to the first FTO owner to go through zee tunnel! Was doing a PR shoot at the tunnel before Crimbo and we got a chance to go through it, not in my V6 unfortunately but a rescue truck!!!
There are speed cameras in the tunnel that record every reg etc but under the data protection act they cant be used as evidence, only verbally passed onto a Guard who might be waiting at the other end!
The tunnel authorities really don't want cars through it (hence the cost) as its really dangerous with all the trucks etc ard they are really concerned about an accident. They crashed a bus in the tunnel a few weeks back to test the Fire Brigade and the smoke extractors failed which they weren't meant too!
Apparently there is a huge bet on with all the boy racers out there to see who'll be first through when it opens at the end of Jan for cars! It only took me about 6 mins to get from the Port to the M50, pretty cool but like everything else it will probably be congested as hell soon enough.

Thats a good point Mark, maybe we should consider a 'Midnight Run' style meet

Would love to see some of the pics, advertising campaign or print media?

Hi CJ,
It was just a PR shoot of 3 guys at the port entrance, not very exciting but may end up in the press. They did the tunnel radio communications, ie, a cop on a bike can go through it a 140kph and his radio should still work! I'll hunt down a snap taken from inside a jeep in the tunnel, mind you it's just like any other tunnel, they should have put some nice wall art up instead!

I didn't realise they had anything that could to a 140kmph! Is it not all Yaris and Fiestas??

You may have seen that the tunnel opened its doors to cars from this morning so we'll be looking to organise the meet over the coming weeks.

It will cost us 6 yo-yos for the privilege but should be small price to pay for the 24V and Mivec noise factor 8)

Watch this space for suggested dates - I'll create a poll
